Uniform Numbers

In this section, I have put together the player history of every uniform number in team history. This was pieced together with my own notes since roughly 1997 onwards, plus old media guides, programs, and Internet research. I believe I’ve got everything during the regular seasons starting back in 1961 through the current year. This obviously also includes the Washington Senators days. I definitely have players covered, but coaches are harder to find info for as I go backwards in history. I have the vast majority of the time covered, but if you know of a hole that I don’t have info for, I’d love to have that information. However, I would prefer that if you are offering help that you have proof of what you’re submitting. I really don’t want a submission like “I’m pretty sure ‘Player X’ wore this number in 1978”. I want some concrete proof of submissions. A few notes about this section:

  • I’m not counting spring training numbers before 2002 because I don’t have access to that info. If I had it, I would use it.
  • In some cases, I will carry spring training uniform numbers here and there with the notation (st) after them.
  • Where relevant (or where I have good pictures), I will try and include some pictures of people wearing the uniform numbers.
  • Thanks to a friend who wishes to remain anonymous, in September 2015 I got roster info on the spring training replacement players from 1995.
  • The single digit uniform numbers are listed here as 01, 02, etc, to keep them in the correct display numerical order. As actually worn, they were 1, 2, etc (except as noted for 00).
  • Some things are hard to come by.  The temporary coach who was up for just two days.  Things like that.  If you have addtl info on things like this (or hell, anything I don’t have), please pass it on.
  • 2020 was an odd beast.  The original Feb/Mar spring training is in notes as (st1) and the one in July is (st2).  If a player was in both of them, I just left it as (st), and only used st1/st2 if there was a reason to note them separately.

You can select the number you want from the list here, or by hovering over the menu option “Uniform Numbers” above.

Some folks who have helped out over the years with this project:

  • Holly – don’t know her last name, used to work for the Rangers
  • Victor Rojas
  • Eric Nadel
  • The beatwriters: Anthony Andro, TR Sullivan, Evan Grant, Levi Weaver.
  • This book – it’s a great resource (although 17 years later it’s starting to get a tad dated).
  • Tim Lange – Another fan who had copies of all the 60’s Senators Media Guides
  • baseball-reference.com – When are they NOT useful?

Retired Numbers:

  • 7 – Pudge Rodriguez (in Aug 2017)
  • 10 – Michael Young (in Aug 2019)
  • 26 – Johnny Oates (in Aug 2005)
  • 29 – Adrian Beltre (in Jun 2019)
  • 34 – Nolan Ryan (in Sep 1996)
  • 42 – Jackie Robinson (by mlb.com)

Thanks TR.  For someone who has been covering the team as long as you have, that’s a big thing to me that you find it of value.

TR also referenced me (and this site) in his final article as a beat writer for the Texas Rangers.  I was seriously honored.

This is every Texas Rangers media guide from 1972 through 2025 – one of the primary sources of info for my uniform number fascination. But certainly not the only source by far.

While I am not upset with the pick of Sierra as the greatest number 21 for the Rangers, not even giving Mike Hargrove a name mention for the number 21 in my mind is swing and a miss. I mean he was 1974 Rookie of the Year.

Do you mean the actual sizes of the numbers on the current uniforms? If so, then I don’t know the answer to that.

Did Doug Mathis wear #64 in the 2020 reg ular season since Jimmy Herget wore it that season ?

Check the 64 page. Have info on that. Basically Mathis wore it in the original spring training before covid happened.

About Site

This is a Texas Rangers fan site run by Joe Siegler. From 1999 through 2013 I used to do daily game updates, but got burnt out on that and stopped.

The site lives on as my favorite section to update I’m still very interested in. That is the Uniform Number history pages, which I’m quite proud of. Plus Ill write the odd article here and there.

I mostly spend my time in this Facebook group talking about the Rangers these days.

If you have any questions, please feel free to drop me a line.
