This was a game that I didn’t get to listed to the whole game to. That’s because my three year old got me up at 6:30 in the morning, and I passed out listening to the game on the sofa. Since it’s radio, I couldn’t back it up and replay like I could on the TiVo. I think I passed out in the fourth inning, and woke up in the eighth. I was initially confused, because the score was still 2-1. Figured that wasn’t possible. But it was. I didn’t miss any scoring, I had “seen” it all early on, as 100% of the game’s runs were scored in the first inning – by both clubs!
G67: Rangers sweep Astros with 9-3 win
In this game, the Astros tried the same trick the Rangers did the day before with Justin Grimm. The Astros ran their own kid out there making his major league debut. That would be Dallas Keuchel. While he didn’t do quite as well as Grimm did the day before, he was no slouch, either. For awhile there, I thought the Rangers were going to fall prey to a long standing problem they have. Which is when we face a guy making his major league debut, we’re pretty well shut down. That was pretty much the case through the fist five innings. We were losing 1-0 going into the bottom of the sixth. Was’t feeling good about the sweep, to be honest.
G66: Justin Grimm gets first ML win, 8-3
Nobody expects a major league team to start a season with it’s five man rotation, and run all the way through till Game 162 (and beyond) with the same five guys. There’s always guys that come up from the minors, guys from the pen who have made spot starts. It happens. All the time. To every team. The Rangers took a nice stab at it this year though. They went through till May 21st until they made their first roster move involving the 25 man roster. They were the last team to do so. G65: Darvish K’s 11, Rangers win 6-2
My Friday night television game on Ch21 was another Yu Darvish start, I think it’s his third start on a Friday night (perhaps more, I didn’t look it up). There was some doubt recently about how he’s faring. Overall, his numbers were quite good. Not lights out, but darned good. His stuff is great, but I suspect we won’t see the real Darvish until next year. Having said that, as of June 15th, having a pitcher with eight wins and an ERA of 3.57 is nothing to sneeze at. I think if you asked most Rangers fan if they’d take an eight win pitcher in the middle of June, they’d be quite happy with that. Yeah, yeah, I know. Huge contract, bigger hoopla surrounding his arrival, so anything short of 13-0 at this point of the year is considered a failure, right? [Read more…]
G64: Feldman again? Rangers lose 11-3
Granted, all 11 runs weren’t Feldman’s fault (and not even all the runs he gave up were his own fault – two unearned), but.. Why are we still running him out there? Robbie Ross, Rangers Captain, Nolan Ryan, Charlie Hough, hell – the ghost of Walter Johnson! Please! No more Scott Feldman as a starter. Thank you.
G63: Rangers eek out a narrow 1-0 victory over D’Backs
As much fun as it was last night watching Colby Lewis hold the D’Backs to a single run, it was so much better on this game watching Matt Harrison hold them to zero! Matt just rocked the house this game. He didn’t go nine like Lewis did, but man, when he was out there, nobody was doing much of anything. Check out these numbers:
G62: Good Colby is back, Rangers win 9-1
The Colby Lewis that had dominated in the playoffs the last few years has been mostly missing so far this season. Not like he’s been bad, he hasn’t, but that lights out version has been missing. Apparently, we found him, as he turned in another stellar outing this game (as well as the one before). This is a good thing given the recent turmoil in the starting rotation in the last couple of weeks.
G61: Rangers win 5-0, but lose Ogando
Those who follow me, know I’m also a Phillies fan. I grew up in Philadelphia, and never saw an American League game until 1993 when I saw a Rangers game in the final season of Arlington Stadium. So I grew up with the NL and NL rules, and more to this discussion, pitchers batting. It’s been a bugaboo of mine for ages, pitchers batting. Even back when I was young, I hated it. You had a good inning going, and whoops – here comes the pitcher. Out. Yeah, there’s a handful of pitchers who could really hit, but let’s face it. 90% or higher of pitchers are horrible at the plate. They don’t have to do it regularly, so they have no incentive to work on that. Then there’s the issue of AL teams sending their guys to bat and doing something that is so against their normal routine that they get hurt. It happened back in June 2008 with the Yankees in Houston when Chien-Ming Wang tore a tendon and was out for most of the rest of the year. Hank Steinbrenner said at the time:
“My only message is simple. The National League needs to join the 21st century,” Steinbrenner said in Tampa, Fla. “They need to grow up and join the 21st century.”
I agree with that. I can’t stand when pitchers bat. The National League needs to add the DH. I know a lot of people will whine about it being bad, how it removes purity of the game, bla, bla, bla. I’m sorry, I can’t stand watching pitchers bat. Steinbrenner is right – the NL needs to get their act together, and get pitchers out of the batters’ box. For those who would say I don’t know what I’m talking about – I do. I moved to Texas when I was 27. I’m now 46, and I’ve lived with the DH for almost 20 years now. G60: Feldman pitches well, loses anyway 5-2
After the last several atrocious outings by Scott Feldman, I was genuinely SHOCKED that they were running him out there again as a starter. I seriously was wondering what the hell they were thinking with this one. But Scott pitched good. Not legitimately good, but compared to the last couple of outings – oh hell yes, this was good. 5.1 innings, Four hits and a walk. Three runs (one unearned). Struck out seven. Seven strikeouts of 16 batters faced is a pretty good ratio. Shame he didn’t pick up the win, though. [Read more…]
G59: Rangers finally win in SF, 5-0
The Rangers broke their “hex” on AT&T Park by sending Matt Harrison out there to stop the recent bleeding. Matt pitched a masterpiece, throwing a complete game shutout of the Giants, 5-0. Got to watch this on TV, and he right now is the team leader with wins I believe at 8. On June 8th. At that rate, if he stays healthy, 20 wins is a serious possibility. The last Rangers pitcher to make a run at that (if memory serves) was Scott Feldman when he won 17 a few years ago. [Read more…]
