ST Game 1: Rangers lose to Royals 6-4

Posted by Joe Siegler on March 3, 2005 at 8:52 pm

Official Spring training games start! Unfortunately, as anyone who has read my site for the last few years knows, these games are torture, since they’re not on TV or on radio. You can sit on one of the major baseball sites and refresh the scoreboard, but that’s nowhere near as much fun. It also makes it hard to write about the games. :)
We lost the opener 6-4 against our Arizona roomates the KC Royals. We used five pitchers in this game. Two of them (Chris Young, Erasmo Ramirez) gave up nothing in their innings of work. Starter Kenny Rogers gave up one, and RA Dickey gave up two, but only one was earned. Kameron Loe however, didn’t fare too well. In his 1.2 innings of work, he gave up 5 hits, and 3 earned runs. Loe did have three strikeouts, though.
Offensively, newcomer Richard Hidalgo made a mark with a home run and a sac fly, for 2 RBI’s. We only had 10 hits, and no one player had more than one, which might have contributed to the 11 runners we left on base. Soriano didn’t play, but otherwise, the starting lineup appeared to be what the projected starting day lineup will be. Kinsler and Arias had doubles, and Ruddy Yan was caught stealing.
From what I can read from the boxscore, a lackluster start to the official beginning of spring training.

Ryan Drese signs two year deal

Posted by Joe Siegler on March 2, 2005 at 9:37 pm

I’m still sick as a dog, but I wanted to get a quick update. The Rangers have resigned Ryan Drese to a two year contract. According to reports, he gets:
$300k signing bonus
2005 – $400,000
2006 – $1.75 Million
2007 – $3 Million option or $50k buyout.
Additionally, the club renewed Laynce Nix and Kevin Mench, as is their right, but there’s chatter that talk will continue with both on something long term.

Will Update Soon

Posted by Joe Siegler on February 28, 2005 at 12:53 pm

Intrasquad games start today. While they don’t “count” in the spring training standings, I’ll try and report on them if I can get info.
However, I probably won’t update until later in the week, as I’ve been terribly sick the last few days – I caugh something going around my office, and I’ve had a fever since Saturday that I can’t shake. :(

Thurman Clyde Greer III is no more

Posted by Joe Siegler on February 21, 2005 at 2:43 pm

In a bit of news that nobody seemed surprised at, Rusty Greer officially retired this weekend. I think it was a longshot for anyone to actually offer him a position where he could make it onto the field, although I would like to have seen him do it.
He says he wants to spend more time with his family, which I full well understand. What surprises me about this is he also turned down the front office thing, saying he wants to be “just retired” for the time being.
I’m sure there will be a “Rusty Greer Day” at some point this season where he’s honored. Would also be nice if they retire #29, but I doubt they’ll do that. :)

Ugueth Urbina’s Mother Found

Posted by Joe Siegler on February 18, 2005 at 9:38 pm

In a story I’ve been following for awhile, it appears that former Ranger closer Ugueth Urbina’s mother has been found alive. Late last season, the current Tiger reliever’s mother was kidnapped and held for ransom. This happened early last September, and has been ongoing till now. Ugueth understandibly had to leave the Tigers to deal with this, and I really had thought a few times she was dead. Fortunately, the story says she’s alive, which is very good news. I’m glad for all of them that there was a good resolution to this story.
What bothers me most about this is the fact that it probably could quite easily happen again to others in countries that are so poor, kidnap the rich guy’s family and demand money. Think about it.
Here’s the full story regarding Urbina’s mom being found:

About Site

This is a Texas Rangers fan site run by Joe Siegler. From 1999 through 2013 I used to do daily game updates, but got burnt out on that and stopped.

The site lives on as my favorite section to update I’m still very interested in. That is the Uniform Number history pages, which I’m quite proud of. Plus Ill write the odd article here and there.

I mostly spend my time in this Facebook group talking about the Rangers these days.

If you have any questions, please feel free to drop me a line.
