How Many in 2025?

Posted by Joe Siegler on May 6, 2025 at 2:00 pm Leave a Comment

Usually towards the end of the year, we always hear about how many players the Texas Rangers have used overall in any particular season. Injuries, callups, usually make for a long list, and you tend to forget the guys who are here so quick that they don’t even have time for the proverbial “cup of coffee”. I’ve done this for awhile now (2025 is the 18th season I’ve kept track of this), and it’s worked out pretty well, and has been permanent for a number of years now. If you’d like to see the final tallies for the other years I’ve done this, you can still see them with links at the bottom of the page.

Anyway, this post will get bumped whenever there is a player who is making his first appearance for the Texas Rangers in 2025.  I am going to count guys who get called up, but don’t play immediately (or sometimes don’t play at all), as they will be part of the 26 man roster officially.  Here goes:

The most recent additions will be on the top of the list.

Total players in 2025: 36
Total pitchers used in 2025: 17
Total position players used in 2025: 19
Total players making major league debut: 1

  • #36 – Evan Carter (6 May – replacing Leody Carter (waivers to Sea))
  • #35 – Blaine Crim (2 May – replacing Jake Burger (AAA))
  • #34 – Tucker Barnhart (30 Apr – replacing Dane Dunning (DFA))
  • #33 – Dane Dunning (28 Apr – replacing Daniel Robert (DFA))
  • #32 – Nick Ahmed (23 Apr – replacing Corey Seager (DL))
  • #31 – Jacob Latz (16 Apr – replacing Marc Church (AAA))
  • #30 – Dustin Harris (9 Apr – replacing Wyatt Langford (DL))
  • #29 – Caleb Boushley (8 Apr – replacing Gerson Garabito (AAA))
  • #28 – Patrick Corbin (4 Apr – replacing Jack Leiter (DL))
  • #27 – Jonathan Ornelas (30 Mar – replacing Josh Jung (DL))

#26 to #1: Adolis Garcia, Chris Martin, Corey Seager, Ezequiel Duran, Gerson Garabito, Hoby Milner, Jack Leiter, Jacob DeGrom, Jacob Webb, Jake Burger, Joc Pederson, Jonah Heim, Josh Jung, Josh Smith, Kevin Pillar, Kumar Rocker, Kyle Higashioka, Leody Taveras, Luke Jackson, Marc Church, Marcus Semien, Nathan Eovaldi, Robert Garcia, Shawn Armstrong, Tyler Mahle, Wyatt Langford

Players making their Making Major League Debut are bolded

Roster Notes:

  • Of the opening day 26 man roster, nobody is making their major league debut, the third time in the last four seasons that’s happened.
  • Of the opening day 26 man roster, 8 players are making their Rangers debuts (Hoby Milner, Shawn Armstrong, Jacob Webb, Robert Garcia, Kyle Higashioka, Jake Burger, Kevin Pillar, Joc Pederson).
  • Previous years counts for major league debuts on opening day roster: 2024 (1), 2023 (0), 2022 (0), 2021  (2, Arihara, DeGeus), 2020 (1, Taveras), 2019 (2, Bird, Dowdy), 2018 (1, Tocci), 2017 (2, Hauschild, Robinson), 2016 (1, Barnette), 2015 (6, DeShields, Kela, Klein, Rua, Smolinski, Verrett), 2014 (1, Seth Rosin), 2013 (2, Leury Garcia & Smokin’ Joe Ortiz), 2012 (2, Darvish & Ross), 2011 (1, Mason Tobin), none in 2010, 2009 (1, Elvis Andrus), and 2008 (1, Kaz Fukumori).
  • Players with “xx” in front of their names on the list were players that were recalled, on the 26 man roster, but did not actually play.  The team doesn’t count those as players who played.  I do (because they were here).

2025 Uniform Numbers

Posted by Joe Siegler on February 18, 2025 at 8:30 am

Well, my annual rite of passage is complete.  I am prepped and ready for pitchers and catchers to report.  That’s right, I got my hands on the full spring training roster last week – but most importantly with all the uniform number assignments.  I’ve gone on my uniform number history page and updated everyone from the lowest (2, Marcus Semien) to the highest (92, Malcolm Moore).

I’ve been tracking uniform numbers for a couple of decades now, and last season I completed a full sweep of every single stinking player in the entire franchise history (going from the Senators in 1961 through the Rangers in 2024).   I keep track of everything going forward, and I’ve put extensive research into the past – I’m pretty darned positive everything is right, but there are a few conflicts I can’t resolve – more info on that here if you care to read.

Anyway, the 2025 season is now loaded, and as usual, I’ve kept track of changes and new guys, so here’s a summary of most of the stuff that’s relevant (although I didn’t include all the high number guys you’ll only ever see in spring training, there’s a LOT of those).

New Guys

These are players that are new to the franchise this year – mostly major league guys, but not 100% of them are.  Someone with an asterisk is a non roster invite to 2025 spring training.

  • 11 – Kyle Higashioka (was last Austin Hedges in 2023)
  • 12 – Chad Wallach (was Andrew Knizner in 2024) *
  • 13 – Alan Trejo (was last Brad Miller from 2022-23) *
  • 18 – Tucker Barnhart (was Carson Kelly in 2024) *
  • 21 – Jake Burger (was Jared Walsh in 2024)
  • 30 – Jesse Chavez (was Nate Lowe in 2024 – Chavez had 30 in 2020) *
  • 41 – Hoby Milner (was Mike Maddux in 2024) *
  • 43 – Shaun Armstrong (was Owen White in 2024)
  • 46 – Cody Thomas (was Brock Burke from 2021-2024) *
  • 47 – Adrian Howser (was last Josh Smith in 2023) *
  • 49 – Michael Plassmeyer (was Austin Pruitt in 2024) *
  • 50 – David Buchanan (was last JP Martinez & Cole Ragans in 2023) *
  • 54 – Cody Heuer (was Jose Urena in 2024) *
  • 62 – Robert Garcia (was last AJ Alexy in 2022)

Uniform Number Changes

There aren’t a ton of these guys, but here’s who is wearing a different number in 2025….

  • 24 – Jonathan Ornelas (was 21 in 2024)
  • 31 – Mike Maddux (was 41 when Max Scherzer was here)
  • 38 – Dustin Harris (was Davis Wendzel in 2024, and Harris was 73 & 67 in 2024 st)
  • 55 – Chris Martin (Martin wore 31 when he was here last, and 55 was Sam Huff from 2021-24)
  • 57 – Daniel Robert (was 76 in 2024 st)
  • 75 – Cody Freeman (was 84 in 2024 st)

Unassigned

Here’s numbers that are unassigned.  Sometimes guys will move to these before the season starts, or guys we sign during spring training get them.

  • 1 – Still unassigned, and hasn’t been since we traded Elvis in 2020.  My expectation is that it will get retired for in him 2025.
  • 9 – Last worn (in season) by Mark Mathias in 2022. Just spring guys since.
  • 16 – Was Travis Jankowski in 2024.
  • 18 – Was last Dennis Santana in 2022
  • 23 – Was Michael Lorenzen in 2024
  • 25 – Was Jose LeClerc from 2019-2024
  • 37 – Was David Robertson in 2024
  • 39 – Was Kirby Yates in 2024
  • 40 – Was Derek Hill & Sandro Fabian in 2024
  • 44 – Was Andrew Heaney in 2024
  • 45 – Was Chase Anderson in 2024
  • 59 – Was Jesus Tinoco & Andrew Chafin in 2024
  • 63 – Was Matt Festa in 2024 (he was re-signed after I put this together, so he could just reclaim 63)
  • 65 – Was Grant Anderson in 2024

UPDATE FEB 18

Yesterday the Rangers published the first roster update of the spring with number changes and whatnot.  Here’s what is changed or added since I posted the first update about two weeks ago.

  • 0 – Sam Haggerty *
  • 23 – Nick Ahmed *
  • 40 – Kohl Drake * (he was 77 until Feb 17)
  • 45 – JT Chargois *
  • 59 – Patrick Murphy *
  • 63 – Matt Festa *
  • 65 – Joe Barlow *
  • 77 – Luke Jackson

Uniform Number Archives

Posted by Joe Siegler on February 14, 2024 at 9:34 pm

If you’ve been following me and my Texas Rangers fandom for any length of time, you should know that uniform numbers fascinate me.  I’m always looking up information on players, and it’s something I’ve been doing for awhile.

Some Background:

I grew up in Philadelphia, and when I was young, it was the era of Steve Carlton, Mike Schmidt, and Pete Rose.  To this day I can still recall their numbers without looking it up (32, 20, 14).  But it went further than that.  Unless they retired someone’s number, I would always think “Hey, that’s so and so’s old number”.   That mindset extended to when I moved to Texas in the early 90’s and because a fan of the Texas Rangers.

Back in 2006, I happened upon this book, which was a list of uniform numbers for every team.  It was a goldmine!  Yeah, the internet was around at this point, but things like Baseball Reference were not.  This was an awesome book, I picked it up, and used the data on the Rangers as a starting point to launch uniform number history on my website.  Back then it was far more spartan than what I have now, but I’ve spent over a decade working the numbers now. 2023 Uniform Numbers

Posted by Joe Siegler on February 15, 2023 at 7:11 pm

Today is 15 Feb 2023, and today is the day that pitchers & catchers reported in Surprise for the 2023 Texas Rangers season.   It’s not quite as exciting as opening day, but still a very important day – the first “official” day of Spring Training.  As such, the new roster is out with everyone’s uniform numbers, which means I spent a little time and updated all the roster pages on my site with the new year’s spring info.  As is my custom, I’m making a post here to mark this as well as a new notes and comments I noticed while editing all the pages here.

Here’s a link to all the data, but before that, a summary of what I learned doing the 2023 start of Spring Training data.

Best Uniform Numbers

Posted by Joe Siegler on December 31, 2022 at 4:22 pm

I’ve spent a lot of time tracking Texas Rangers uniform numbers.  I’ve gotten some attention for it as well from people of note connected to the Rangers (such as Eric Nadel, Victor Rojas (both on air), & TR Sullivan (online)).  I’m proud of that.  If you’ve never checked out my uniform number history section of the website, please do.  As I said, I’ve spent a lot of time on it, but if you have some info that I do not (with proof), I’d love to hear from you.

But I seem to have developed a reputation as the “Uniform Number guy” for the Texas Rangers, because earlier today John Moore tweeted out that I should do a list of “All time Rangers” for every uniform number.  I saw that tweet in the morning before breakfast, and dammit – I was out to breakfast with my wife this morning, and all I could think of was uniform numbers.  So thanks John.  ;)

Anyway, I decided to have a go this afternoon, and what I’ve done is go down all the uniform numbers and pick out the Rangers player that I think is the best at that number.  A few caveats about the research for the list first… [Read more…]

Today was a nightmare.  I was up super early (right at 5AM – thanks bladder), but made a tactical error (insofar as sleep goes).  I looked at my phone.  I had a notification on Mastodon telling me that my personal blog story was unreachable with a 404 error.  OH NO!  I instantly was jerked awake, and sprung to action (at 5AM).  Discovered that quite a lot of stuff was down.  Decided to write a story ab  out what happened (given that’s what I do), so if you want to read my horror story, check this out: [Read more…]

Anyway, this post will get bumped whenever there is a player who is making his first appearance for the Texas Rangers in 2022.  I am going to count guys who get called up, but don’t play immediately (or sometimes don’t play at all), as they will be part of the 26 man roster officially.  Here goes:

Players making their Making Major League Debut are bolded

Roster Notes:

  • 2022 starts with a 28 man opening day roster, as a concession to the compressed spring training that resulted from the lockout.  That goes back to 26 on May 1.
  • Of the opening day 28 man roster, nobody is making their major league debut. That hasn’t happened since 2010.
  • Of the opening day 28 man roster, 8 players are making their Rangers debuts. (Abreu, Calhoun K, Garber, Gray, Holland, Miller, Seager, Semien)
  • Previous years counts for major league debuts on opening day roster: 2021 2 (Arihara, DeGeus), 2020 (1, Taveras), 2019 (2, Bird, Dowdy), 2018 (1, Tocci), 2017 (2, Hauschild, Robinson), 2016 (1, Barnette), 2015 (6, DeShields, Kela, Klein, Rua, Smolinski, Verrett), 2014 (1, Seth Rosin), 2013 (2, Leury Garcia & Smokin’ Joe Ortiz), 2012 (2, Darvish & Ross), 2011 (1, Mason Tobin), none in 2010, 2009 (1, Elvis Andrus), and 2008 (1, Kaz Fukumori).
  • Players with “xx” in front of their names on the list were players that were recalled, on the 26 man roster, but did not actually play.  The team doesn’t count those as players who played.  I do (because they were here).

About Site

This is a Texas Rangers fan site run by Joe Siegler. From 1999 through 2013 I used to do daily game updates, but got burnt out on that and stopped.

The site lives on as my favorite section to update I’m still very interested in. That is the Uniform Number history pages, which I’m quite proud of. Plus Ill write the odd article here and there.

I mostly spend my time in this Facebook group talking about the Rangers these days.

If you have any questions, please feel free to drop me a line.
