Tex & Mike Young in AL MVP results
The AL MVP was announced today. Arod won. Don’t care about that.
Two Ranger players were in the results. Mark Teixeira came in seventh and Mike Young came in 11th. Tex got one vote for third place, which was the highest either of them got. Mike Young’s highest was two votes for sixth place. I expect Tex to place much higher than that over the next couple of years, as would Mike Young.
Here’s a page on mlb.com with the complete tally of votes.
Show Me the Money
Well, today is the day that free agents can talk money with other clubs, as the “exclusive negotiating” period has ended. That means the following players are now no longer Rangers:
John Wasdin, Kenny Rogers, Sandy Alomar, Steve Karsay, Doug Brocail, Greg Colbrunn, & Richard Hidalgo.
I suppose technically we can still claim some sort of minor hold on them through December 7th, which is the last day to offer a player arbitration, but for all intensive purposes, they’re now “former Rangers”. Kind of surprised to see John Wasdin turn up there, as I thought he wanted to stay, as did Sandy Alomar. The rest don’t bother me in the least, we can take care of their spots in some other way.
I’ve updated my roster page with all these changes (and rather easily too, a nice side benefit of the blog software I’m moving most of the site towards.

Site Changes
Today I’ve made a few changes to the website. For awhile now I’ve been doing entries and reports and comments in Six Apart’s Movable Type (MT) blogging software. It’s worked out so well for me that I’ve decided to move a lot more of my website into MT. When I started this site back in December of 1998, I was using Microsoft Frontpage. And for a couple of things I still will, but there’s a lot of things on this site that can be better served by being put into MT.
For the last couple of weeks I’ve been working on moving the roster pages and the transaction archives into MT software. I’ve finished that today (mostly). The site’s menu now goes to the proper locations. It’s pretty much the same information that was here before, except now it’s in MT software. This has the added advantage to you of making the data searchable. This will also make my life a lot easier going forward in terms of data maintenance.
If you go the Roster page, you’ll see all the current active players, as well as the guys on the DL, and some selected minor league players. This is the same as it was before. (Yeah, I know several of the active players have filed for FA, but I don’t move ’em to former until that exclusive time period is up and thy’re truly not Ranger players anymore). The search in this area will search all the roster pages I have. Now earlier I said it was mostly all done. That’s because I haven’t finished converting over all the former Ranger player roster pages into the new format. Due to the way they were made over the years, I have to do them manually, and it’s somewhat tedious, so only some are done. I will get all the other ones in there. Since this was the only thing left to do, I didn’t want to hold up all these changes for former player pages.
Secondly, if you go to the transactions pages, you’ll see the roster transactions that I’ve had on my site since February of 1999. I have mostly tracked major league changes over the years, not so much the minor league transactions. But if you go into that area, there’s another search box, and that will let you search all my roster transaction archives.
So that’s the latest changes to the site. Please take a look at the areas, and come back here and leave a comment with your thoughts on these changes. I intend on making more such changes before the start of next season. I’m probably also going to be changing the way I handle game updates, too, although I haven’t worked out exactly how I’m going to do that yet.

Vote for the 2005 Play of the Year
All the various team sites are running their polls for the Play of the Year. The Rangers site is no different. If you head over there now you can vote on 6 plays nominated for the best Rangers play of the year. They are:
- Barajas’ Grand Slam – 4/20 at TB – Rod Barajas hit his first career grand slam in a 12-10 victory
- Teixeira’s All-Star game homer – 7/12 vs. NL – Mark Teixeira hit a home run at the All-Star Game in Detroit
- Blalock’s dribbler – 8/28 vs. MIN – Hank Blalock hit a walkoff dribber in the ninth inning to push Rangers to a 2-1 win
- Teixeira’s 100th homer – 9/6 at MIN – Teixeira hit a home run in the 10th inning, which made him just the fifth player in Major League history to hit 100 or more homers in their first three seasons.
- Mench’s winning RBI – 9/14 vs. BAL – Kevin Mench hit an RBI single in the 10th inning to propel the Rangers to a 7-6 victory.
- Young’s 200th hit – 9/15 vs. SEA – Michael Young became the 22nd player in Major League history to record three consecutive 200-hit seasons
If you haven’t done it already, head on over and vote. If nothing else, you can watch a video clip of the six plays and have a little Ranger baseball for now. ;)
Gillick named Philles GM
In about half an hour from now, Pat Gillick will be named the new GM of the Philadelphia Phillies. I know this is a Rangers blog, but I wanted to say something about it.
I see it as a “status quo” move. I personally would have preferred Hunsinger (sp?) be the new GM, but it’s not like Gillick will be _BAD_. I just see it as a “OK, let’s set up Amaro to be GM in four years”. I don’t think you could do that if you brought in Hunsinger.
I suppose the thing we’ll see a bunch in the press covering the Gillick hiring is the Joe Carter clip that ended the 1993 World Seris. That’s the one baseball clip that drives a stake through my heart every time. Can’t watch it.
I have a friend who lives in Seattle, and I’ve asked him for some insight into Gillick, which is where he gets his “stand pat” nickname to see how true that really was. I’ll update when I hear back.
