2025 Uniform Numbers

Posted by Joe Siegler on February 18, 2025 at 8:30 am

Well, my annual rite of passage is complete.  I am prepped and ready for pitchers and catchers to report.  That’s right, I got my hands on the full spring training roster last week – but most importantly with all the uniform number assignments.  I’ve gone on my uniform number history page and updated everyone from the lowest (2, Marcus Semien) to the highest (92, Malcolm Moore).

I’ve been tracking uniform numbers for a couple of decades now, and last season I completed a full sweep of every single stinking player in the entire franchise history (going from the Senators in 1961 through the Rangers in 2024).   I keep track of everything going forward, and I’ve put extensive research into the past – I’m pretty darned positive everything is right, but there are a few conflicts I can’t resolve – more info on that here if you care to read.

Anyway, the 2025 season is now loaded, and as usual, I’ve kept track of changes and new guys, so here’s a summary of most of the stuff that’s relevant (although I didn’t include all the high number guys you’ll only ever see in spring training, there’s a LOT of those).

New Guys

These are players that are new to the franchise this year – mostly major league guys, but not 100% of them are.  Someone with an asterisk is a non roster invite to 2025 spring training.

  • 11 – Kyle Higashioka (was last Austin Hedges in 2023)
  • 12 – Chad Wallach (was Andrew Knizner in 2024) *
  • 13 – Alan Trejo (was last Brad Miller from 2022-23) *
  • 18 – Tucker Barnhart (was Carson Kelly in 2024) *
  • 21 – Jake Burger (was Jared Walsh in 2024)
  • 30 – Jesse Chavez (was Nate Lowe in 2024 – Chavez had 30 in 2020) *
  • 41 – Hoby Milner (was Mike Maddux in 2024) *
  • 43 – Shaun Armstrong (was Owen White in 2024)
  • 46 – Cody Thomas (was Brock Burke from 2021-2024) *
  • 47 – Adrian Howser (was last Josh Smith in 2023) *
  • 49 – Michael Plassmeyer (was Austin Pruitt in 2024) *
  • 50 – David Buchanan (was last JP Martinez & Cole Ragans in 2023) *
  • 54 – Cody Heuer (was Jose Urena in 2024) *
  • 62 – Robert Garcia (was last AJ Alexy in 2022)

Uniform Number Changes

There aren’t a ton of these guys, but here’s who is wearing a different number in 2025….

  • 24 – Jonathan Ornelas (was 21 in 2024)
  • 31 – Mike Maddux (was 41 when Max Scherzer was here)
  • 38 – Dustin Harris (was Davis Wendzel in 2024, and Harris was 73 & 67 in 2024 st)
  • 55 – Chris Martin (Martin wore 31 when he was here last, and 55 was Sam Huff from 2021-24)
  • 57 – Daniel Robert (was 76 in 2024 st)
  • 75 – Cody Freeman (was 84 in 2024 st)

Unassigned

Here’s numbers that are unassigned.  Sometimes guys will move to these before the season starts, or guys we sign during spring training get them.

  • 1 – Still unassigned, and hasn’t been since we traded Elvis in 2020.  My expectation is that it will get retired for in him 2025.
  • 9 – Last worn (in season) by Mark Mathias in 2022. Just spring guys since.
  • 16 – Was Travis Jankowski in 2024.
  • 18 – Was last Dennis Santana in 2022
  • 23 – Was Michael Lorenzen in 2024
  • 25 – Was Jose LeClerc from 2019-2024
  • 37 – Was David Robertson in 2024
  • 39 – Was Kirby Yates in 2024
  • 40 – Was Derek Hill & Sandro Fabian in 2024
  • 44 – Was Andrew Heaney in 2024
  • 45 – Was Chase Anderson in 2024
  • 59 – Was Jesus Tinoco & Andrew Chafin in 2024
  • 63 – Was Matt Festa in 2024 (he was re-signed after I put this together, so he could just reclaim 63)
  • 65 – Was Grant Anderson in 2024

UPDATE FEB 18

Yesterday the Rangers published the first roster update of the spring with number changes and whatnot.  Here’s what is changed or added since I posted the first update about two weeks ago.

  • 0 – Sam Haggerty *
  • 23 – Nick Ahmed *
  • 40 – Kohl Drake * (he was 77 until Feb 17)
  • 45 – JT Chargois *
  • 59 – Patrick Murphy *
  • 63 – Matt Festa *
  • 65 – Joe Barlow *
  • 77 – Luke Jackson

About Site

This is a Texas Rangers fan site run by Joe Siegler. From 1999 through 2013 I used to do daily game updates, but got burnt out on that and stopped.

The site lives on as my favorite section to update I’m still very interested in. That is the Uniform Number history pages, which I’m quite proud of. Plus Ill write the odd article here and there.

I mostly spend my time in this Facebook group talking about the Rangers these days.

If you have any questions, please feel free to drop me a line.
