BASEBALL IS BACK!

Posted by Joe Siegler on March 10, 2022 at 2:19 pm

Owners ratify new contract by score of 30-0. Union votes yes to deal, voting 26-12 – BASEBALL IS BACK OFFICIALLY!

Details and news below. Also, read through the comments, there’s several other things mentioned there too.

Here is MLB’s official “FAQ for 2022 Season”: https://www.mlb.com/news/mlb-2022-season-faq.  More after the break.

Details that I collated during the day

  • Five year deal
  • Opening day will be April 7. Rangers home opener LIKELY (but not confirmed) to be Apr 11.
  • Likely outcome for Rangers home opener: Those who had tickets for Mar 31 will be used on Apr 11 home opener. Those who had tickets for Apr 11 prior to that will get bumped/credited/etc. Formal decision there coming, but this is likely.
  • Spring training camps open with a March 11 voluntary report date and March 13 mandatory date.
  • Season will be 162 games. Season will be extended 3 days with doubleheaders to make up for April 7 Opening Day.
  • There were eight votes on the union exec council, and all eight of them voted no. That means the player/team vote was 26-4. The four teams that voted no on MLB proposal: Mets, Yankees, Astros, Cardinals.
  • Playoffs now 12 teams, with the top two division winners earning a first-round bye.
  • Playoff Detail: No more Game 163 tiebreakers. All playoff spots will be determined through NFL-type tiebreaker formulas.
  • Playoff Detail: No re-seeding for the LDS. 1st seed plays winner of 4 vs. 5 Wild Card Series. 2nd seed plays 3 vs 6 winner.
  • NL adopts designated hitter
  • Man on second base in extra innings is over. Not coming back.
  • First six picks of the MLB Draft to be determined by lottery
  • Doubleheaders will be 9 innings, not 7.
  • Limits on player options within season (five)
  • Advertising on helmets and jerseys
  • Minimum wage $700,000 – going to $780,000 at end of deal.
  • Arbitration exchange date (teams, players making salary requests) will be March 22. Hearings will take place during season. Rangers have four arb eligible players. Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Willie Calhoun, Brett Martin, & Taylor Hearn.
  • Amateur draft now 20 rounds.
  • This year’s Rule 5 draft officially canceled.
  • There will be a ban on the shift starting in 2023, but as to what form it will take and what the nitty gritty is, that’s unknown.
  • Clubs that signed players who rejected the QO under the previous CBA will still forfeit draft picks for those players. For the Rangers, they will surrender two picks since they signed Corey Seager and Marcus Semien. In addition, free agents who rejected the QO and have yet to sign will still require the forfeiture of a draft pick.
  • Rob Manfred says the 2023 schedule will be more balanced. Teams will play at least one series against every opponent in both leagues.
  • In exchange for agreeing to an International Draft by July 25, 2022, MLB will eliminate the qualifying offer system (direct Draft-pick compensation) for free agents. QO remains for now.

About Site

This is a Texas Rangers fan site run by Joe Siegler. From 1999 through 2013 I used to do daily game updates, but got burnt out on that and stopped.

The site lives on as my favorite section to update I’m still very interested in. That is the Uniform Number history pages, which I’m quite proud of. Plus Ill write the odd article here and there.

I mostly spend my time in this Facebook group talking about the Rangers these days.

If you have any questions, please feel free to drop me a line.
