Showalter gone

Posted by Joe Siegler on October 4, 2006 at 12:50 pm

Well, the big “meeting” apparently has ended with Buck Showalter out.
This is breaking news now, so my story will probably stay in flux until all the info is out. Here’s the stories on it so far:

  • Ft Worth Star Telegram
  • Texas Rangers Site
  • ESPN/AP Story – with video
  • Dallas Morning News | DMN Rangers blog
  • The Biz of Baseball.com
  • Baseball Musings.com

This news actually forced me to listen to the ticket (ugh, at least Norm’s on), and they said that Wakamatsu will be the replacement.
My personal opinion? I wasn’t part of the lynch mob who wanted him out, I wasn’t grabbing my pitchfork. On the other hand, the talk about people bitching and the big name players not liking him might make them stick around more. I guess this might make for a happier clubhouse if the reports are true.
Now how about announcing the long term contract for Gary Matthews? Resigning Mark DeRosa? That’s the kind of news I’d like to hear.
Anyway, who would you want as a replacement? Leave a comment here with your thoughts.
UPDATE @ 12:50PM: According to this, Buck was asked to resign and refused, so he was fired. Be interesting to see what’s said in the press conference this afternoon.
UPDATE #2 @ 2:30PM The ESPN story now has some video of the Baseball Tonight crew talking about the firing. Link.

I expected Buck to be gone before the season was over. I didn’t mind Buck, but figured that is the way things happen in baseball.
I’d like to see Hershiser come back and be the manager, but I doubt that’ll happen.

What about Rudy Jaramillo. They have been so afraid he might get hired away and since he is the best hitting instructor around, I’d consider him.

I’m gonna second the thought of Rudy Jaramillo… I think it will end up being Wakamatsu, but Rudy is both a player and fan favorite… I guess we’ll find out soon enough…

Why in the world would we promote Wakamatsu? If this is the move then why not just keep Buck? This isn’t going to change the clubhouse atmosphere at all. The Rangers need to totally clean house with their coaching staff, except for Rudy, who gets my vote for manager. He already has the respect of the players, which I believe is the number one priority for a manager.

why hasn’t anybody mentioned giardi yet?!
there is nobody on the market who is better than that. and does anybody know if jaramillo actually WANTS to be a manager?

I think the Rangers need to clean house. Yea Rudy J is liked but they need a new atmosphere. I say bring in someone from the outside.
My top 5 are as follows:
#5 Bill Hasselman: It seems the Sox loved him as a coach this season and really want him to get more of a feel for complete control as a manager in the minors. I think any catcher that lasts for longer than 10 years is ready.
#4 Bud Black: He should already have a job as a head honcho. The man controlled a decent staff in Anaheim for a number of years. Where do the Rangers need the most help?? On the hill.
#3 Ron Washington: I also think he would be a better manager than most of the guys the Rangers will try to bring in. Plus you take him away from the A’s organization.
#2 Lou Pinella: Very unlikley but hey can’t Ranger fans dream too??
#1 Joey Cora: He has a ton of energy which is going to be needed to deal with this young team. He has a win first mentality like his current boss Ozzie Guillen. He played sound defense and worked the count as much as anyone when he played. Working the count is something the Rangers need. Why not bring in a pesky manager instead of these boring old lugs the Rangers have always hired???
    So my surprise vote:
    Joey Cora

I’m glad to see Showalter gone. If you look at the stats every team that Buck’s been fired from has went on to win the World Series the next year. If it means brining a championship back to DFW then I am all for it.

Oh please, that’s just a silly coincidence stat. Players make the team, not the manager. Yeah, a good manager can help but having the right manager alone won’t win you a world series.

About Site

This is a Texas Rangers fan site run by Joe Siegler. From 1999 through 2013 I used to do daily game updates, but got burnt out on that and stopped.

The site lives on as my favorite section to update I’m still very interested in. That is the Uniform Number history pages, which I’m quite proud of. Plus Ill write the odd article here and there.

I mostly spend my time in this Facebook group talking about the Rangers these days.

If you have any questions, please feel free to drop me a line.
