Game Recap
SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — Adam Eaton left his final spring training start for the Texas Rangers after 1 1-3 innings Wednesday, feeling pain in the same finger that sent him to the disabled list in San Diego last season.
Eaton, who was trailing his former team 3-1, came out because of discomfort in his right middle finger. He was scheduled to pitch the Rangers’ second game Tuesday against Boston but said he probably would miss several starts.
“Judging by how it was last year, I’d say I’m going to miss more than a few starts,” said Eaton, who ended up allowing four runs and five hits in the Rangers’ 13-11 loss.
Before injuring the finger June 15 in his first loss in two months and shortest start all season, Eaton was 9-1 with a 3.18 ERA for San Diego. Eaton twice went on the disabled list after that, was 2-4 in his last nine starts and didn’t pitch for the Padres in a three-game playoff loss to St. Louis.
An MRI exam was scheduled later Wednesday, and the results were expected Thursday.
“It came on a breaking ball,” Eaton said. “I knew something was wrong right away. When they came out to visit me at the mound, they put the ball in my hand, and I couldn’t even squeeze it.”
General manager Jon Daniels and manager Buck Showalter tried to be optimistic.
“Last season he had a lot of swelling, but there isn’t any of that this time,” Showalter said. “We’re going to have to see the medical reports and then figure out where we go from there.”
Eaton was making his first start since getting hit by a line drive below his pitching elbow March 19 against the Chicago Cubs.
“My mind-set right now is if we have a hole, we’ll have to fill it,” Daniels said. “We have a lot of options to consider.”
San Diego starter Jake Peavy said he was “devastated” to see his friend and former teammate injured again.
“I feel sick to my stomach,” Peavy said. “You hate to see anybody get injured, but it’s especially tough to see this happen to Adam. I’ve known him as long as I’ve known anybody in baseball. It’s the same thing he did with us last season. He was out two months.”
Peavy, the Padres’ scheduled opening-day starter Monday in San Francisco, made his second start since returning from the World Baseball Classic. He won despite allowing five hits and four runs in five innings.
Brian Giles hit two home runs for San Diego as the teams combined for six homers in swirling winds. Adrian Gonzalez, who came to the Padres in the trade that sent Eaton to Texas, had the other San Diego homer.
David Dellucci, Mark Teixeira and Brad Wilkerson homered for the Rangers. It was Teixeira’s first homer of spring training.

About Site

This is a Texas Rangers fan site run by Joe Siegler. From 1999 through 2013 I used to do daily game updates, but got burnt out on that and stopped.

The site lives on as my favorite section to update I’m still very interested in. That is the Uniform Number history pages, which I’m quite proud of. Plus Ill write the odd article here and there.

I mostly spend my time in this Facebook group talking about the Rangers these days.

If you have any questions, please feel free to drop me a line.
