My Commentary

I'm sorry, but I won't be writing any commentary for the Angels series.  As I write this on Monday, I've come down with what feels like the flu, and my head is rather woozy.  I can't think straight for more than a few minutes at a time.  I just wanted to get the site updated before the games against the Yankees tomorrow.

Game Recap

ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA (TICKER) -- Jeff DaVanon's first major league homer in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Anaheim Angels to a 7-6 victory over the Texas Rangers, who were knocked out of the race for the American League's best record.

DaVanon, who collected his first big league hit in the fifth, completed Anaheim's rally when he led off the ninth with a homer to center field off Mike Morgan (13-9).

"I still have chills," said DaVanon, who was making his third major league start. "It's like a dream come true to get your first major league hit and home run. I didn't do too well my first two starts but tonight I felt relaxed."

Texas took a 6-3 lead into eighth inning and brought on Mike Venafro to replace starter Esteban Loaiza. Jim Edmonds reached on a one-out error by third baseman Todd Zeile and Mo Vaughn walked. Tim Crabtree relieved but Tim Salmon greeted him with an RBI double. Troy Glaus followed with a two-run single to tie it.

Firmly entrenched in the AL West basement, Anaheim won for only the eighth time when trailing after seven innings. The Angels have shown improvement under interim manager Joe Maddon, going 17-10 since Terry Collins resigned. With the win, they avoided tying the worst record in club history.

Before the game, general manager Bill Bavasi announced his resignation and was re-assigned within the organization.

"I don't really know how to feel," Maddon said. "Your best friend is gone and you win a game like this. It's certainly an emotional roller coaster. I don't know what to think. I'm just going to try to do the best job I can. You can see that Billy did a good job with the minor league players, like the ones that helped us win tonight."

Texas' Ivan Rodriguez broke the single-season AL record for homers by a catcher when he hit his 35th in the third inning. Terry Steinbach hit 34 in 1996 for the Oakland Athletics.

Tom Goodwin belted a three-run shot in the fourth for the Rangers, who are two games behind Cleveland and the New York Yankees for the best record in the league. Texas cannot catch the Yankees, who took the season series, 8-4.

"You get a three-run lead going into the eighth inning and then we just couldn't get the door closed," Texas manager Johnny Oates said. "That was a big ballgame for us, as far as homefield advantage. Like I said earlier this summer, the most important thing is to get in."

Rafael Palmeiro singled home the first run of the game in the opening inning and has 40 RBI in his last 35 games.

Glaus brought Anaheim within 5-3 in the fourth inning with his 29th homer, a two-run shot. He matched a career high by driving in four runs.

Mike Holtz (2-3) tied the longest outing of his career with three hitless innings, walking two and striking out three.

Recap #2

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) _ Jeff DaVanon got his first two major league hits, including a ninth-inning homer that lifted the Anaheim Angels over Texas 7-6 Friday night, stopping the Rangers' six-game winning streak.

Troy Glaus tied a career high with four RBIs, including a game-tying two-run single in the eighth inning and a two-run homer in the fourth.

DaVanon, the son of former major leaguer Jerry DaVanon, homered off Mike Morgan (13-9), making a winner of Mike Holtz (2-3), who tied a career best with three innings of one-hit relief.

Because of the loss, the only way Texas can open the playoffs at home would be if the Rangers win their final two games and the Cleveland Indians lose their final two. If that doesn't happen, the Rangers open at the Yankees on Tuesday night.

Rangers starter Esteban Loaiza allowed three runs and six hits in seven innings and left with a 6-3 lead. But the Angels rallied in the eighth against relievers Mike Venafro and Tim Crabtree, parlaying two singles, a walk and third baseman Todd Zeile's 25th error into three runs. Crabtree surrendered an RBI single by Tim Salmon and Glaus' clutch hit.

Ivan Rodriguez set an AL record for catchers with his 35th homer, and Tom Goodwin hit a three-run shot to help Texas build a 5-0 lead in the first four innings against rookie Ramon Ortiz.

With the Angels last in the AL West, general manager Bill Bavasi resigned before the game.

The Rangers, who clinched their third AL West title in four years on Sunday, opened the scoring in the first inning on an RBI single by Rafael Palmeiro. They made it 2-0 in the third on Rodriguez's towering homer to right-center, which broke the AL mark for catchers set by Oakland's Terry Steinbach in 1996.

Loaiza retired the first 10 Anaheim batters before giving up a single to Jim Edmonds, who advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Mo Vaughn's single. One out later, Loaiza wild-pitched Vaughn to second before surrendering Glaus' 29th homer, which trimmed the Rangers' lead to 5-3.

Loaiza stranded two runners in scoring position by retiring Glaus on a grounder to third to end the sixth. The Rangers made it 6-3 in the seventh when Scarborough Green scored on Holtz's bases-loaded wild pitch to Palmeiro.

Ortiz gave up six runs and eight hits in six-plus innings.

GAME NOTES: The Rangers will put AL Championship Series tickets on sale Saturday at 9 a.m. CDT at the Ballpark in Arlington and at other outlets. ... The Rangers' loss ensured the Yankees will have one of the top two records in the AL and home-field advantage in the first round of the playoffs. ... Rusty Greer was struck on the right elbow by a Holtz fastball in the seventh and was removed for a pinch runner. ... Rodriguez needs two hits to tie the major league single-season record of 201 by a catcher, set by Mike Piazza in 1997 with the Los Angeles Dodgers. ... Palmeiro leads all designated hitters with 116 RBIs and has 148 in all. Two more will make him the second player in Rangers history with at least 150 RBIs. Juan Gonzalez had 157 last season. ... DaVanon's first hit was a sixth-inning single. ... Zeile needs two more RBIs to give the Rangers five players this season with at least 100. That would tie the major league record set by the '36 Yankees.
