My
Commentary
A good win, with decent pitching (although not great), and a bunch of offense -
lots of home runs, they were all over the place again! - Sorry, an
extremely abbreviated commentary from me.
A day game tomorrow - that doesn't fit well with me, we seem to keep losing these.
-- Joe Siegler
Game Recap
ARLINGTON, TEXAS (TICKER) -- Lee Stevens and Todd Zeile hit milestone home runs as the Texas Rangers pounded the struggling Chicago White Sox, 10-4.
Juan Gonzalez and Ivan Rodriguez also homered for the Rangers, who increased the American League's third-best total to 195 by hitting at least four homers for the 10th time this year.
"We are capable of scoring a lot of runs," said Rangers manager Johnny Oates, whose team has 10 homers in three games this month. "We have a deep lineup. There is pressure on the team every inning. Every inning you have 90 RBI staring you in the face."
Zeile got Texas within 3-1 with a leadoff homer in the second, his 20th, as the Rangers established a franchise record by having five players reach the plateau.
Gonzalez (32), Rodriguez (31), Rafael Palmeiro (41) and Stevens (22) are the other three Rangers with at least 20 home runs.
"You look at our lineup, its pretty strong 1-9," Stevens said. "It can put pressure on a pitcher. When there's a lot of pressure, you tend to make mistakes. As a hitter, that's what you look for, a mistake to hit."
Stevens snapped a 4-4 tie with a leadoff homer against James Baldwin (9-12) in the sixth. It was his career-high 22nd homer, one more than his 1997 total.
"I'm just trying to be consistent," he said. "I swing the bat and try to win some games. It doesn't do a lot of good to hit two or three (homers) in a game and lose."
The Rangers put away the game with a five-run seventh inning as Rodriguez homered and Stevens stroked a two-run double. Gonzalez and Royce Clayton also had RBI hits in the frame.
Stevens went 3-for-4 with three runs scored as the Rangers returned home from a 4-3 road trip and won for the 13th time in 19 games.
The White Sox have lost five in a row and eight of their last nine.
John Burkett (6-7) won his second straight start, giving up four runs and nine hits over six-plus innings.
"I thought if I can keep it at four runs our team could get the runs we needed," he said. "The last thing I wanted to do was give them the lead back."
Baldwin had won five straight decisions before allowing five runs and nine hits over six frames.
"JB left too many balls up," White Sox manager Jerry Manuel said. "Against a team like this, when they hit mistakes, they do damage."
The Rangers scored four times in the fourth against Baldwin to tie it, 4-4. Gonzalez led off with his 32nd homer, Clayton stroked an RBI single and Mark McLemore lofted a sacrifice fly.
Stevens opened the sixth by sending Baldwin's 2-1 pitch over the right-field wall as the Rangers went ahead for good. Baldwin gave up three homers, increasing his season total to 31.
"You're never aware of how many homers a guy gives up when you go up there," Stevens said. "You just look at a gameplan and try to follow it and get good swings."
Texas scored five times against a pair of relievers in the seventh. Rodriguez opened with his 31st homer before Rusty Greer and Gonzalez stroked consecutive doubles to build a 7-4 lead and knock out Sean Lowe.
Rookie Jesus Pena entered and three batters later, Stevens lifted a two-run double to deep left. Clayton followed with his second RBI single to cap the scoring.
Greer went 3-for-5 for the Rangers, who had 15 hits, giving them at least 10 for the 13th time in 14 games.
The White Sox jumped to a 3-0 lead in the second as red-hot rookie Carlos Lee had an RBI double before Craig Wilson swatted a two-run homer.
Lee went 2-for-4 to raise his average to .315. He is batting .489 (23-for-47) during a 12-game hitting streak.
Recap #2
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- There are no easy outs in the Texas Rangers' lineup, and the Chicago White Sox pitchers got another reminder of that on Friday.
Lee Stevens, batting seventh in the Rangers' order, hit a tiebreaking homer and drove in three runs as Texas handed the White Sox their fifth straight defeat, 10-4.
The Rangers rallied from an early 4-1 deficit behind a 15-hit attack. Stevens, who was 3-for-4, extended a career-high with his 22nd homer to snap a 4-4 tie as the Rangers beat the White Sox for the third time in seven meetings this season.
"I look at our lineup, one through nine, and that's got to put a lot of pressure on pitchers," Stevens said. "The more pressure that's on a pitcher, the more mistakes he makes. And hitters are more prone to hit mistakes."
Leading 5-4, Texas broke open the game in the seventh. Ivan Rodriguez led off with his 31st homer and Juan Gonzalez added an RBI single.
Stevens then drove in two runs with a double and Royce Clayton had a run-scoring single to push the lead to 10-4.
Rusty Greer had three hits for the Rangers, 33-16 since the All-Star break. Clayton, batting eighth, had two hits and two RBIs for Texas.
Texas has gotten 10 or more hits in 18 of 21 games and has scored 805 runs this season, second in the majors behind the Cleveland Indians.
"We're capable of scoring a lot of runs," Rangers manager Johnny Oates said. "We have a deep lineup. There is pressure on the other team every inning. Every inning you have 90 RBIs staring you in the face."
John Burkett (6-7) won for the third time in four starts despite allowing three second-inning runs.
Burkett allowed four runs and nine hits in six innings.
Reliever Mike Venafro escaped from a bases-loaded, two-out situation in the seventh with a strikeout of Brian Simmons.
"He was able to come through in a pressure situation," Burkett said. "That was the game right there."
James Baldwin (9-12) gave up five runs and nine hits in six innings.
"I left a lot of pitches up and they punched them," Baldwin said. "I couldn't really get my curveball down."
Chicago scored three runs in the third on Carlos Lee's two-out RBI double and Craig Wilson's fourth homer.
Texas got a run in the second on Todd Zeile's 20th homer, but Chicago made it 4-1 in the third on Magglio Ordonez's sacrifice fly.
The Rangers tied it at 4-4 with a three-run third. Gonzalez led off with his 32nd homer, and later in the inning Clayton added an RBI single and Mark McLemore delivered a sacrifice fly.
GAME NOTES: White Sox DH Frank Thomas bruised his ankle and was lifted for pinch-hitter Brian Simmons in the sixth. Thomas is day-to-day. ... The Rangers brought up infielder Scott Sheldon, right-hander Danny Patterson and left-hander Matt Perisho from Triple-A Oklahoma. Texas removed first baseman Shawn Gallagher from its 40-man roster and assigned him outright to Double-A Tulsa. ... Baldwin had won his previous five decisions. ... White Sox manager Jerry Manuel shuffled his rotation before the game, moving Baldwin up from Saturday and pushing Friday night's scheduled starter Jaime Navarro back a day.
