My Commentary

Now this is more like it.  Avoiding a record fifth loss in a row, and a sweep to the Chisox (shudder), we broke out and won 10-0.

This game seemed like ours from the start.   We scored in every inning except the 5th and 6th.   We went up 1-0 in the first inning, and it turns out that's all we needed.

Esteban Loaiza pitched like he's capable of, throwing eight innings, allowing no runs on only 5 hits.  He looked good, sharp, and is the kind of pitcher we wanted him to be when he came here last year.  I'm really hoping (along with everyone else, I'm sure) he can keep this up, and this is the kind of pitching we get from him.   He almost got decapitated in the first inning when Frank Thomas had a screaming liner right as his head.  However, Esteban ducked out of the way and caught it - a very impressive play.

Rusty Greer had yet another home run in Chicago - that brings his total there to about a million.  :)  Pudge had two home runs in this game too, increasing his home run total this year to 26, I believe.

Danny Kolb pitched the 9th, allowing just one hit and preserving the shutout.  We looked good yesterday - we needed that going into Cleveland tonight where I'm hoping we can come away with a split.  I don't have a particularly good feeling right now.

Game Recap

CHICAGO (TICKER) -- Esteban Loaiza has gone from a mop-up role to stopper in the span of a month.

Loaiza combined with rookie Danny Kolb on a six-hitter and Rusty Greer and Ivan Rodriguez both homered twice as the Texas Rangers halted a four-game losing streak with a 10-0 rout of the Chicago White Sox.

An almost forgotten member of the Rangers bullpen in mid-July, Loaiza (5-1) won his fifth straight decision and improved to 4-0 since joining the rotation. He allowed three singles and two doubles over a season-high eight innings, walking one and striking out five.

"I wanted to finish the game, but I can't say that much about it," Loaiza said. "Johnny (manager Johnny Oates) made the decision because I had thrown 126 pitches. And he told me to get ready for my next start."

"Loaiza is not used to being a starter (and) 126 pitches is enough for him," Oates said. "I'm more concerned with his next start than getting a complete game or shutout."

Since July 19, the 27-year-old righthander has lowered his ERA from 7.22 to 4.82.

"You never know what will happen in this game," Loaiza said. "If I don't catch Frank Thomas' line drive in the first, I might be in the hospital right now. But instead I pitched my best game of the year."

Greer completed an impressive series with solo homers in the third and eighth innings. He was 9-for-19 with four home runs and eight RBI in the four-game set.

"I don't know what it is with the White Sox, but I don't change my approach against any team," Greer said. "I'm certainly not a home run hitter, so I take them when I can get them."

Rodriguez smacked a solo shot in the eighth and a two-run blast in the ninth, extending his career high to 26 homers.

"Today was one of those days where everything was working," Oates said. "We got a lead early and built on it. Esteban Loaiza was the key. We got good pitching and good hitting. I was especially happy with the way the team responded."

Chicago's John Snyder (9-8) was pounded for the second straight start, allowing five runs and eight hits in 3 2/3 innings. The White Sox had a three-game winning streak stopped and have lost eight of their last 11.

"To win three out of four is good against Texas. It's very difficult to sweep a team like that," Chicago manager Jerry Manuel said. "But you can't be satisfied with winning the series. When you have a team down, you have to keep them down. We gave them a big breath of air."

Rodriguez doubled with one out in the first and Snyder issued two-out walks to Juan Gonzalez and Rafael Palmeiro before uncorking a wild pitch that scored the game's first run.

Texas scored again in the second on Tom Goodwin's RBI double, and Greer homered to lead off the third. Gonzalez followed with another walk and later scored on Royce Clayton's single to give the Rangers a 4-0 cushion.

Snyder did not last the fourth. After striking out Mark McLemore and Rodriguez, he allowed a single to Greer and threw his third wild pitch of the game. Gonzalez delivered an RBI single, chasing Snyder for Scott Eyre.

Rodriguez and Greer hit back-to-back homers off Carlos Castillo in the eighth. Greer completed his first two-homer game of the season and seventh of his career.

Rodriguez duplicated the feat in the ninth, finishing off his fourth two-homer game of the year and eighth of his career.

"It was a great day for me, but I don't look to hit home runs," he said. "I just try to hit it hard. I hit it hard three times today."

Recap #2

CHICAGO (AP) _ Maybe the Texas Rangers don't have to worry about their pitching after all.

The Rangers got another strong performance from Esteban Loaiza, who won his fifth straight decision and fourth consecutive start in the Rangers' 10-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Sunday.

Ivan Rodriguez and Rusty Greer each homered twice as the Rangers broke a four-game losing streak.

``That's a shot in the arm and a kick in the seat at the same time,'' Texas manager Johnny Oates said. ``We don't want to go to Cleveland with a five-game losing streak.''

Loaiza (5-1) gave up five hits and one walk, striking out five over eight innings. Danny Kolb pitched the ninth.

``I wanted to finish, but I had 120-something (126) pitches and I have to get ready for the next start,'' Loaiza said.

The closest the White Sox came to knocking out Loaiza was a line drive by Frank Thomas to the mound in the first. Defending himself, Loaiza caught the ball and fell backwards.

``I caught it. Who knows if I'd be here or at the hospital (otherwise),'' Loaiza said.

Since he joined the Rangers' rotation July 24, Loaiza is 4-0 with a 2.27 ERA over five starts.

``As a reliever, I threw hard all the time,'' Loaiza said. ``As a starter, I can mix my pitches more.''

Pitching has been a concern for the Rangers all season. They haven't worried about their hitting. With 667 runs through Saturday, they ranked second in the American League behind the Indians.

Oates said the key to Loaiza's success has been his control.

``It's what I expected today,'' Oates said. ``His stuff was good and he didn't have many walks.''

Greer led off the third with a home run and then hit another, his 13th, in the eighth following Rodriguez's first shot. It was Greer's first multihomer game this season and seventh of his career. Greer went 3-for-5 in the game.

``Esteban gave us eight strong innings and that's what we needed today,'' Greer said. ``It was important for us to come out and play well today. Going to Cleveland _ that's a tough place to win.''

Rodriguez extended a career-high with his 26th homer, a two-run shot in the ninth. He has four multihomer games this year and eight in his career.

``I'm not looking to hit home runs,'' Rodriguez said. ``I've got a chance to drive in runs now and I'm just trying to do what I do best _ drive the ball.''

The Rangers maintained a 4 1/2-game lead over Oakland, which beat Toronto 9-5 on Sunday, in the AL West.

``Today was a day when everything was working,'' Oates said. ``We got a lead early and built on it. You couldn't script it any better.''

Oates wasn't worried about his team, which had lost seven of 10 games before Sunday.

``We're not as good as the first 20 games after the break and we're not as bad as the last four,'' he said.

Tom Goodwin hit an RBI double and Royce Clayton and Juan Gonzalez each hit RBI singles for the Rangers. Texas chased White Sox starter John Snyder (9-8) in the fourth.

``They were able to put runs up on the board in each of the first four innings. That's the sign of a good offensive ballclub,'' Chicago manager Jerry Manuel said. ``It's very difficult to sweep a team such as the Rangers.''<

Notes: Thomas' sixth-inning double tied him with Harold Baines for third in team history with 314 doubles. ... Texas also lost four straight June 12-15, June 19-22 and July 3-6. ... Mark Clark, who has been on the disabled list since June 20 with a tender right elbow, threw off the mound Saturday for the first time. He reported no pain after the 10-minute session. He will throw again Monday. ... The Rangers have had at least a four-game lead in the AL West every day since June 15.
