My Commentary

Double ugh.  If we looked asleep in the first game, this one was worse.  I don't know if it was the actual game itself, or the fact that we lost both ends of a doubleheader to the White Sox, but I was really disgusted with this one.  :(

Rusty had another home run in Chicago - his best home run hitting city by far.

Game Recap

CHICAGO (TICKER) -- James Baldwin recorded his first home win in nearly a year as the Chicago White Sox completed their second doubleheader sweep of the season with a 7-4 victory over the Texas Rangers.

Baldwin (6-11) was 0-9 in 12 home starts since his last win at Comiskey Park, a 6-5 triumph over the New York Yankees on September 6, 1998. He blanked the powerful Rangers until Rusty Greer delivered a two-run single with one out in the seventh inning.

Rookie Jesus Pena got one out before Carlos Castillo gave up two runs and three hits over the final 2 1/3 innings.

Ray Durham homered and drove in three runs for the White Sox, who also swept a twinbill from Tampa Bay on April 28. Since moving across the street into the new Comiskey Park in 1991, Chicago has swept nine doubleheaders and split seven.

"It was good to finally win some games. In my brief tenure, doubleheaders have been pretty good for us," White Sox manager Jerry Manuel said. "It was good to get back on the winning track."

The White Sox ended a seven-game losing streak in the opener, 4-2, behind rookie Kip Wells.

"He kind of showed me the ropes of how to pitch to these guys," Baldwin said. "Anytime you can shut a team like that down is real good. It was good to be able to relax and hope this is a turning point for us so we can string a couple of victories on the map."

Greer, who homered in the first game, smacked another solo blast in the nightcap. He went 5-for-9 with four RBI in the doubleheader.

"They threw the ball well," Greer said. "Kip Wells held us down for five innings and the bullpen came in and shut us down the rest of the way. And Baldwin threw hard and had a good breaking ball. He knows how to pitch."

Recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma to pitch the second game, Rangers rookie Ryan Glynn (2-4) surrendered all seven runs -- six earned -- and nine hits in five-plus innings.

"He threw strikes today, and I was happy with that," Texas manager Johnny Oates said. "He got the ball up a couple of times and it hurt him. But it was good to see him around the plate."

Texas has dropped three straight and six of its last nine games. The Rangers' lead in the American League West was trimmed to 5 1/2 games over Oakland.

Chicago scored in each of its first four at-bats against Glynn. Mike Caruso reached on third baseman Jon Shave's throwing error with one out in the first, took third on Frank Thomas' double and came home on a groundout by Magglio Ordonez.

In the second, Craig Wilson singled with one out and came all the way around on Brook Fordyce's double. Durham followed with an RBI single for a 3-0 lead.

Thomas led off the third with a single and scored on Chris Singleton's double before Durham's two-run blast in the fourth made it 6-0.

Wilson drew a leadoff walk in the sixth and was balked to second before Fordyce singled. Danny Patterson came on and retired Durham on a foulout before Caruso's groundout built a seven-run cushion.

Greer and Lee Stevens hit meaningless homers in the ninth off Castillo to close the scoring.
