My Commentary

I was at this game, and it turned out to be not as hot as I thought it would be.  Don't get me wrong, it was hot, but it wasn't that bad - but I was in the shade the whole time.  :)

Aaron Sele pitched extremely well throughout 8th innings (actually, 7 innings and a batter).  He struck out a career high 13 batters, but unfortunately, the Tigers pitcher(s) pitched better. We only had 5 hits, and one run.  Detroit had 8 hits with 3 runs, one of which was a solo home run, but this struck me as a rather well pitched games on both sides.

I did score the game, but I was busy taking pictures again - just in case you didn't think I've taken enough.  :)

Not a whole lot to say about this game, except there was some great pitching on both sides - and we never really got going offensively.

Game Recap

ARLINGTON, TEXAS (TICKER) -- Dave Mlicki and three relievers combined on a five-hitter to overcome Aaron Sele's career high 13 strikeouts and lead the Detroit Tigers to a 3-1 victory over the Texas Rangers.

Mlicki (7-10) pitched 5 2/3 innings to win for the fourth time in five starts. The righthander allowed one run and four hits, walking three and striking out four.

"I didn't have my best stuff, I tried to overthrow a lot," Mlicki said. "I got some ground balls, which was good. I tried throwing breaking balls when I was behind in the count."

Rookie Francisco Cordero replaced Mlicki with two outs in the sixth and struck out all four batters he faced. Doug Brocail allowed one hit and struck out one in a scoreless eighth and closer Todd Jones struck out the side with one walk in the ninth for his 18th save in 21 opportunities.

Tony Clark homered for Detroit, which completed a 3-4 road trip.

Sele (12-7) struck out every starter at least once and became the first Ranger with 13 strikeouts since Roger Pavlik on August 7, 1992. The righthander threw 114 pitches allowing three runs and eight hits with two walks in seven-plus innings.

"I tried to get them to hit some ground balls and they swung above the ball," Sele said. "Strikeouts don't matter. We lost the game. Detroit scored their runs when they had their chances."

Clark struck out in his first at-bat against Sele. But with two outs in the third, he gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead with a 411-foot homer. He also singled twice and has hit 11 of his 19 homers since the All-Star break.

"We were fortunate tonight to get some outstanding pitching," Clark said. "Aaron's got outstanding stuff. He was moving the ball around and hitting his spots."

With one out in the first, Deivi Cruz doubled to left field and Juan Encarnacion followed with an RBI single to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Sele walked Dean Palmer and after Clark struck out, Damion Easley was hit by a pitch to load the bases. But Sele retired Gabe Alvarez on a foulout.

Clark began the second with a base hit to right and moved to second on Easley's single. After Alvarez struck out, Bill Haselman singled to score Clark and give Detroit a 3-0 lead.

The Rangers scored their run in the sixth. Rusty Greer led off with a walk, moved to third one out later on Todd Zeile's single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Lee Stevens. Cordero came on and struck out Roberto Kelly.
