My Commentary

Couple of comments.

  1. What a turnaround from last night's fiasco
  2. Goodbye Carlos Delgado!

Pudge Rodriguez continued his hot streak at the plate with a three run home run in the bottom of the second inning, but that was about it for the next ten innings.  We didn't mount much of any offense after that until we won the game in the bottom of the 12th on a run scoring single by Royce Clayton, scoring Roberto Kelly.

Esteban Loaiza was himself.  Decent stuff, but erratic again.  Once you stack all his innings together, he's not pitching all that bad (got a no decision tonight), but he's not a pitcher that fills you with a whole lot of confidence.  I wish he'd do better, it certainly looks like he can, but he doesn't seem to be as dominating as he could be.

On the flip side, Brad Ausmus had four hits last night, and had a great offensive game.  No home runs, so it wasn't all THAT bad.  :)

Juan "B.B." Gonzalez left the game after four innings with a pulled hamstring muscle, and is listed as day to day.  All of our regular outfielders this season have gone down with some sort of injury.  Now that Roberto Kelly is playing regularly out there, I expect him to get hurt now.  The Rangers 99 Outfielders curse.

Game Recap

ARLINGTON, TEXAS (TICKER) -- Royce Clayton singled home Roberto Kelly with the winning run in the bottom of the 12th inning as the Texas Rangers handed the Detroit Tigers their 11th loss in 13 games, 4-3.

Kelly led off the 12th and fell behind 0-2 before coaxing a walk from Nelson Cruz (2-4). Luis Alicea sacrificed before Clayton bounced a 1-2 pitch up the middle. Kelly beat center fielder Gabe Kapler's throw, eluding catcher Brad Ausmus' diving tag.

"I just wanted to make sure I was seeing the ball and pick it up," Clayton said. "He threw me a couple of sliders that I was reaching for. I just wanted to stay up the middle and I was able to get it there. You're up there fighthing for your life and battling."

The Rangers avoided a third straight loss while improving to 5-1 in extra innings.

"It's good to get back to our winning ways. We wanted to win it," Clayton added. "We knew that this team was going to be frustrated, but we are still hungry. We still have a long way to go."

Clayton's second hit of the game made a winner of Danny Patterson (2-0), who struck out one in a perfect 12th and combined with Tim Crabtree and Jeff Zimmerman on 5 1/3 innings of no-hit relief.

Ivan Rodriguez continued his power surge with a three-run homer in the third for Texas, which has taken nine of the last 12 meetings from the last-place Tigers.

Ausmus recorded his sixth career four-hit game and drove in a run for Detroit, which has dropped 16 of its last 21 road games.

"Clayton fouled off some good pitches until he got something good to hit," said Tigers manager Larry Parrish. "We played a good game tonight. But they did their damage in just one inning other than the last inning."

The Tigers scored first, grabbing a 2-0 lead in the third against starter Esteban Loaiza. Kimera Bartee led off with a single and moved up on Luis Polonia's comebacker. Ausmus delivered an RBI double and scored on a two-out single by ex-Ranger Dean Palmer.

Texas answered quickly as Lee Stevens and Clayton opened the bottom half with singles off Justin Thompson. Mark McLemore grounded out, but Rodriguez smacked his career-best 24th homer for a 3-2 lead. He has more home runs, 14, against Detroit than any opponent.

"I left the ball up to Pudge, I tried to change up," Thompson said. "I'm pleased, but I still got away with a lot of pitches. We played well but it was that one ball that ends up killing us."

Detroit evened it in the fifth on Tony Clark's RBI single.

Bidding for a fifth straight win, Loaiza was reached for three runs and 11 hits in 6 2/3 innings. Thompson avoided a third straight loss, yielding three runs and seven hits in seven innings.

"Loaiza did an outstanding job as a starter. Pitching was the difference tonight," said Rangers manager Johnny Oates. "With the exception of Pudge's three-run home run, we didn't have much offense tonight."

Rangers right fielder Juan Gonzalez left after four innings with a strained left hamstring and is listed as day-to-day.
