My Commentary

A totally masterful appearance by Aaron Sele.   Complete game shutout, allowing only 6 hits, 10 strikeouts, and no walks.  I don't think I've seen him ever pitch as good, and this is the best pitching outing by a Ranger pitcher all year (although the complete game by Mike Morgan in Anaheim not that long ago was really close).

There's not a whole lot else to say about this one.  Sele was totally dominating, and Pudge was Pudge again lately, 2-5 with 3 RBI's on a 3 run home run.  Mark McLemore almost hit for the cycle getting a double, triple, and a single in his first three at bats.  Didn't get a homer though.  Still, was an awesome game all around.

I got to see it on TV, and it was wonderful to see Sele pitch this well - hope he can keep it up through October <g>.

Game Recap

ARLINGTON, TEXAS (TICKER) -- Aaron Sele is almost as hot as his team.

Sele tossed a six-hitter for his fifth straight win and first shutout in more than 15 months, leading the sizzling Texas Rangers to a 6-0 blanking of the Toronto Blue Jays.

Sele scattered five singles and a double, walked none and matched a season high with 10 strikeouts. He has won his last four starts and has not lost since June 27 at Seattle.

The 29-year-old righthander threw 82 of 124 pitches for strikes, retired the side in order four times and set down the last seven batters to nail down his third career shutout. It was his first shutout since April 21, 1998 against Seattle.

Sele's seventh career complete game came 45 starts since his last one on May 23, 1998 against Kansas City.

Ivan Rodriguez supplied the offense with his career-high 22nd home run, a three-run blast off reliever Roy Halladay that opened a 6-0 lead in the sixth.

The Rangers sent starter Pat Hentgen (7-8) to his earliest exit in more than four years and rolled to their 16th win in 19 games. They remained 7 1/2 games ahead of second-place Oakland in the American League West, while the Blue Jays fell into a tie for the wild card spot with Boston.
