Commentary (by me)
Figures. The game I wanted to go to
because of the raising of the Nolan Ryan flag, and the giveaway of a Ryan flag
and the one that is one off from my season ticket game is the one they blow out
the Royals. :(
To make matters worse, my lame ass cable company has Fox Sports Southwest out of whack again for the second day, forcing me to miss another Rangers game because of their screwed up setup - this is about 6 this season because of this. I didn't get to see the game, but I listened to part of it, and I got disgusted because I couldn't see it that I stopped listening too, and started watching a movie.
I hate my cable company! I live across the street from a TCI building, yet we have some other company - go figure.
Sele turned in his longest outing of the season, going 8 full innings. He gave up 5 runs though, but did go long in the heat, which was nice to see.
Game Recap
ARLINGTON, TEXAS (TICKER) -- Ivan Rodriguez had five hits and four RBI and Aaron Sele notched his fourth straight win as the Texas Rangers rolled to a 12-5 triumph over the Kansas City Royals.
Rodriguez went 5-for-6, establishing a career high for hits in a game. He started an eight-run third inning with a two-run homer, his 19th, and capped it with a two-run single to put the Rangers ahead, 9-1. In between, Todd Zeile had a two-run double, Lee Stevens produced a sacrifice fly and Zeile scored on a wild pitch.
Rodriguez also singled in the first, seventh and eighth as he became the 24th player in team history to collect five hits in a game and the first since Juan Gonzalez on July 30, 1996. He is hitting .522 (24-for-46) with four home runs and 14 RBI during a 10-game hitting streak.
"It feels great," Rodriguez said. "Five hits is good, but the main thing is the win. I feel strong at the plate and my bat is quicker. I just come out to play."
The third inning marked the third time this season Texas scored eight runs in a frame and the first since May 13 vs. Baltimore. The Rangers sent 13 men to the plate in the third, with the first six scoring.
Sele (11-6) allowed five runs and eight hits for the third consecutive start, striking out seven over eight innings. He pitched more than seven innings for the first time since June 27 and leveled his record against the Royals to 5-5.
"Our bullpen needed a rest and I was able to carry myself through eight innings," Sele said. "I had a curveball and was able to throw in and out."
"(Sele) gave us a quality effort tonight," Rangers manager Johnny Oates said. "He had an especially good curveball and gave us a good eight innings. I didn't want to use our bullpen tonight for a lot of innings."
Zeile and Stevens each had two RBI for the Rangers, who have won 12 of their last 14 games and own an eight-game lead over the Oakland Athletics for first place in the American League West.
Kansas City's Carlos Beltran hit his 16th homer, a three-run shot in the fifth. He added a double and has hit safely in 20 of his last 25 games.
Brian Barber (1-3) did not have it in his first start since April 18. He surrendered seven runs and seven hits over two innings in his first appearance against Texas.
"I felt fine, but I just didn't do my job," Barber said. "The way we've been hitting you have to give the team a chance. Anything I threw up there, they seemed to be hitting."
Royals first baseman Mike Sweeney singled in the second inning to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. He is batting .456 (26-for-57) during the streak.
Teammate Jermaine Dye was not as fortunate as he went 0-for-4, ending his nine-game hitting streak.
