Commentary (by me)

Where do I start with this one?  17 hits, 14 runs, 5 doubles, two stolen bases, two gift errors, etc...  A big offensive display last night.  Yeesh!  The Giants starter got knocked around, pitching only 1.1 innings, giving up 5 runs and 6 hits.

I scored this game at home last night, and I picked an interesting game to do it to.  :)  However, after the top of the first, I wasn't so thrilled at our chances.  Ryan Glynn (who was recalled to make a start, and probably has made his last start for awhile) started off well, retiring the first two, but then a single and a walk preceded Mr. Bonds, who slapped a ball over the fence for a 3 run home run.  What was interesting about the home run is how easily it went over the fence - it hardly looked like he hit the thing.  Very deceptive power stroke he has.

Anyway, we answered back with a couple of runs in the bottom of the first, and then after Glynn got the job done in the second, we scored three more runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead - never giving it back.  In the third, we almost had three straight doubles in a row (Zeile, Stevens, Mateo), but the Stevens hit was ruled an error, and it probably should have been a hit.

We scored in 6 of the 8 times we came to the plate, the only two we didn't score were the fourth and the seventh.  We were due for one of these "explosions".  :)  In looking at my scorecard, everyone scored at least one run except Raffy (who was also the only person without a hit, going 0-4) and Royce Clayton - although Royce was on base in the bottom of the 8th, and could have scored if we had gotten another hit or two.  Ruben Mateo went 4-5 with two RBI's and two runs scored - definitely his best night so far.  McLemore also went 3 for 5 with a run scored, and 3 RBI's - I think everyone was expecting him to sink this year and be released, but he's making us rethink our second base plans, I'm sure.

Ryan Glynn didn't walk as many as he has in the past, but did walk 4 in 4.1 innings, which is still too many - his final two batters were walks, and at the time, the Rangers were only up two runs with Jeff Kent & Barry Bonds coming up.  My gut feeling says that Glynn has pitched his last start for awhile, Loaiza will probably get moved back to the rotation, and Danny Kolb will get called up for the long relief job.

Loaiza did get his first win of the season and got pegged for 4 runs, which is more than Glynn gave up, actually.  However, for some reason, Loaiza seemed better than Glynn did - it's one of those "intangible" things I can't put into words, even when you look at their lines:

TEXAS ip h r er bb so hr era
Glynn 4 1/3 5 3 3 4 0 1 6.89
Loaiza (W, 1-1) 4 2/3 5 4 4 1 1 0 7.22

Still, a win is a win is a win no matter how you get them, and scoring 14 runs is always nice to see.  :)

Game Recap

ARLINGTON, TEXAS (TICKER) -- Rookie Ruben Mateo had four hits and two RBI, Mark McLemore chipped in with three hits and three RBI and the Texas Rangers got contributions from nearly everyone in the lineup in a 14-7 victory over the San Francisco Giants.

Ivan Rodriguez also had three hits and drove in a run for Texas, which has won four of its last five games to improve to 9-8 in interleague play this season. Rafael Palmeiro was the only Rangers' starter without a hit and he and Todd Zeile were the only members of the Texas lineup without an RBI.

"We need that offense every night," said right fielder Juan Gonzalez, who came through with an RBI double and a sacrifice fly. "The last couple of games, some guys have not had as many chances. But tonight, we scored a lot more because we had chances."

Rookie Ryan Glynn, recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma to make the start, did not last long enough for the win. He allowed three runs and five hits in 4 1/3 innings with four walks and no strikeouts.

"I saw a lot of the same things we saw in his previous stint up here," Texas manager Johnny Oates said. "For him to be the type of major league pitcher we want him to be, he'll have to throw more strikes."

Esteban Loiaza (1-1) went the last 4 2/3 innings and recorded his first victory since August 31.

"It's already July and I had 27 or 28 innings coming into the game," he said. "I just want to get the team going. I'm just getting ready every day out of the bullpen. I hadn't thrown this much since I was on rehab with Oklahoma. I'm happy today. I got a lot of innings, faced a lot of hitters. I'll probably have tomorrow off, but I'll be ready for tomorrow, if needed."

"He threw strikes in the game when we had a lot of runs. I can live with strikes. You can't get outs unless you throw strikes," Oates said.

Barry Bonds hit a three-run homer in the top of the first to stake the Giants to an early lead, but starter Chris Brock could not protect it as San Francisco lost for the fifth time in six games and fell to 1-4 since the All-Star break.

"I didn't have very good stuff tonight," Brock said. "You have to chalk this up to just one bad game and go on. It wasn't a good time for me to have 12 days' rest."

Texas answered quickly, scoring twice in the bottom of the first as Rusty Greer singled in McLemore and scored on a double by Gonzalez. The Rangers took the lead for good in the second. Mateo started the rally with a leadoff single and stole second before McLemore doubled with one out.

Rodriguez delivered an RBI single and Greer walked before Felix Rodriguez relieved Brock. After a passed ball, Gonzalez's sacrifice fly made it 5-3.

Texas kept up the attack in the third on Mateo's two-run double and tacked on two in the fifth as McLemore had an RBI single and Greer added a run-scoring groundout.

J.T. Snow had two hits and three RBI for the Giants, who remained 2 1/2 games ahead of second-place Arizona in the National League West.

"They didn't station-to-station us, they bullet-to-bulleted us," San Francisco manager Dusty Baker said. "It's hard to imagine them scoring all those runs when Palmeiro didn't hit. We've got to chalk it up and put it behind us."
