Commentary (by me)

The third time was not a charm, as John Wetteland blew another save, giving up two home runs in the ninth inning letting another game get by us.  We did take the series against the Diamondbacks 2-1, but we should have swept - it felt that way all day.

We almost pulled it out in the bottom of the 10th, as Matt Mantei came in and had almost the same situation as the other day when we won after Randy Johnson came out of the game.  This time, Matei did his job, and shut down the Rangers in the bottom of the 10th, but we did make a threat.  John Wetteland gave up the two homers in the top of the 9th to let the game get tied at 6 (after Juan had put us up with a 3 run home run to make it at the time 6-3).   The two home runs that Wetteland gave up were his 7th & 8th of the year - he gave up just 6 all of 1998.

Unfortunately, the strange start time of 3PM played a big factor, as Rusty Greer had a ball hit to him, but given the fact he was in blinding sunlight, he couldn't see the ball till it was on the ground, allowing two runs to score.  You really can't blame him, I suppose, but the loss was hard to take.  This was our first extra inning loss of the season, we're now 4-1 in such games.

John Burkett pitched well again, if not as dominating as a few other recent appearances, but given how horrible he was at the start of the season, this is a big improvement.  Mike Munoz is starting to look like one of the best off season pickups we've had in awhile.  Unlike Mark Clark who also came in this year - I read something where if he doesn't show improvement soon, he may need "Tommy John" surgery, and could be out all of 2000 in addition to this year!

Game Recap

ARLINGTON, TEXAS (TICKER) -- This time, the Arizona Diamondbacks rallied and the bullpen held on for an 8-6, 10-inning victory over the Texas Rangers in the finale of a three-game series.

Arizona, which blew ninth-inning leads in losing each of the first two games of the series, tied the game on ninth-inning solo home runs by Kelly Stinnett and Jay Bell off John Wetteland (3-4). Bell had given the Diamondbacks a 1-0 lead in the first inning with his 26th homer.

"I don't ever say we thought we had it in the bag," said Texas manager Johnny Oates. "No one in the dugout thought it was in the bag and neither did anyone on the field. But I like our chances with a two-run lead and John Wetteland coming in to pitch. John didn't locate the ball as well as he would have liked. Today he left two fastballs up in the zone."

With one out in the 10th, Dave Dellucci reached on an infield single before Wetteland walked Travis Lee and rookie Hanley Frias to load the bases. Esteban Loaiza replaced Wetteland and struck out Stinnett, but left fielder Rusty Greer lost Tony Womack's pop-up in the sun, allowing Dellucci and Lee to score.

"On a high fly ball that gets above the sun, maybe you have a chance, but on a line drive or a bloop, no way," Greer said. "It was completely in the sun; there's no way I could have got it."

Dan Plesac (1-1), acquired from Toronto for shortstop Tony Batista and pitcher John Frascatore on June 12, replaced Darren Holmes with the bases loaded in the ninth and retired All-Star Rafael Palmeiro on a groundout to end the inning.

"I've never been on a team like this; they just keep fighting back," said Plesac, who is on his fifth team in 14 seasons. "They're so resilient."

Matt Mantei, who walked three in ninth inning of Thursday's 3-2 loss, allowed one hit and struck out two in a scoreless 10th for his 12th save in 15 opportunities. Mantei was making his third appearance since being acquired from the Florida Marlins on July 9 for three players.

Wetteland suffered his seventh blown save and allowed two homers in a game for just the second time in 514 major league games, most of them in relief. Wetteland has blown saves in his last three appearances and has given up runs in four of his last five games.

"It seems like we are going through a period where I throw a bad pitch and then I throw a good pitch and it doesn't matter," Wetteland said. "This is probably one of the toughest periods in my career. It's just one of those things that honestly I don't have the answer to."

"That was a game that was won. We're real proud of that game," said Arizona manager Buck Showalter, who managed Wetteland with the New York Yankees in 1995. "We kept battling back. He's as good a closer as you're going to find. We were just able to get to him today."

Arizona starter Andy Benes, who has only one win in his last seven outings, allowed six runs and eight hits in 6 2/3 innings. With the score tied 3-3, Benes allowed a leadoff single to Mark McLemore in the fifth inning.

After Ivan Rodriguez lined out, McLemore stole second and Benes threw wildly to first on Greer's comebacker to put runners at second and third. Juan Gonzalez sent an 0-2 pitch over the left-center field fence for his 25th homer and a 6-3 lead.

Arizona closed the deficit to 6-4 on Andy Fox's RBI double in the sixth.

The Rangers took a 2-1 lead when Greer followed Rodriguez's one-out single in the first inning with his eighth home run. Rookie Ruben Mateo's run-scoring double pushed the lead to 3-1 in the second.

Luis Gonzalez had an RBI groundout in the third and Stinnett added a sacrifice fly in the fourth, tying the game, 3-3.
