Commentary (by me)
The Good: Todd Zeile extended his hitting streak. We had three
Ranger home runs.
The Bad: Mike Morgan seems more like what his record indicates he would be pitching like, not like the guy we saw in Anaheim the other week.
The Ugly: Two errors in the 9th inning leading to a total defensive meltdown, costing us the game.
Oh my, what an ugly way to lose a game. Not only did we commit one error (Rusty's bobble of a ball he tried to basket catch), but the one by Wetteland to finish the game was obscene. Actually, he probably should have been charged with TWO errors, as on the play before it he failed to cover his part of the infield - Wetteland seemed asleep on defense, big time.
Scarborough Green made it into this game - he drew a walk. I tend to root for the guys who hardly ever get to play, I seemed to have picked this up from my wife Lynn who feels this way about all kinds of sports players. I'm wondering how much longer he stays around, especially if we make some sort of move before the end of the month.
The ending of this game really spoiled what was an otherwise good game. Mike Morgan looked sloppy again, and we ended up taking the lead on three home runs hit by our guys today, including a real dinger of a shot by Ruben Mateo (440 feet or so). Todd Zeile set a career high hitting streak for himself with 17, and I was feeling good going into the bottom of the ninth, especially after a baserunning blunder by the Padres left us with two outs and the lead. Then Wetteland has his meltdown.
It's too bad, as I can't think of anything else about this game except this.
Game Recap
SAN DIEGO (TICKER) -- All-Star closer John Wetteland committed a costly error at first base in the bottom of the ninth inning as the San Diego Padres scored twice for a 5-4 victory over the Texas Rangers.
With runners on second and third and two outs, All-Star first baseman Rafael Palmeiro dove in the hole to smother Eric Owens' grounder and flipped to Wetteland (2-3), who was late getting to the bag.
"If I had bounced off the mound to cover first it would have been all academic," said Wetteland, who was charged with his first error of the year after reaching back for Palmeiro's toss. "That's what's killing me and, I'm sure, everyone else on this club."
Owens, who hit a full-count pitch, easily beat the play and was credited with an RBI infield hit. Wetteland dropped the throw, allowing Damian Jackson to race home from second with the winning run.
"When I hit it, I thought it would get through," Owens said. "Palmeiro made a heck of a play to get to the ball. When I got out of the batter's box, I already was beating Wetteland over there."
"Owens did a great job to put the ball in play and make sure he made it to first with his hustle," San Diego manager Bruce Bochy added. "That's what speed will do for you."
Jackson followed a near-devastating double play by setting up the winning run with his team-leading 22nd stolen base.
"Jackson's stolen base was also a key play there," Bochy noted. "We had a lot of good things happen that inning, except for the play at the plate.
The Padres had loaded the bases with none out on an error, walk and bunt single before right fielder Juan Gonzalez caught Reggie Sanders' fly ball and threw out Ed Giovanola at the plate for a double play.
"After they got the double play we probably would have lied down early in the year, and they would have won the game," Owens said.
The Padres rebounded from Friday's 7-2 loss in the series opener and improved to 3-5 following their team-record 14-game winning streak.
Wetteland, who allowed two unearned runs, suffered his fifth blown save against a major league-leading 26 saves. His defense failed him from the start. Left fielder Rusty Greer dropped Carlos Baerga's fly ball to open the inning.
"I'm very disgusted with our defense in the ninth inning," Rangers manager Johnny Oates said. "We should know we didn't play well in the ninth. We made a couple of outstanding plays but we created the situation we were in."
Gonzalez, Palmeiro and rookie Ruben Mateo homered off Padres starter Andy Ashby, who was selected to the National League All-Star team.
Palmeiro started the seventh with a solo homer, his 21st. Todd Zeile singled and Mateo followed with his third home run of the year as the Rangers went ahead, 4-3.
Ashby lasted 7 2/3 innings, allowing four runs and eight hits with a walk and six strikeouts, and remained unbeaten in his last four starts. He was coming off Sunday's shutout at Coors Field in Colorado.
Donne Wall (6-1) recorded the final four outs for the win. He stranded runners at first and second in the eighth by getting a red-hot Zeile to pop out, then walked a batter in a scoreless ninth.
Four Rangers relievers combined to allow just one hit over 3 2/3 scoreless innings before Wetteland entered.
All-Star rookie Jeff Zimmerman walked two in a scoreless seventh and lowered his ERA to 0.86. He has walked more than one batter in an outing only twice this season.
The Padres built a 3-0 lead against starter Mike Morgan in the third inning as Wally Joyner doubled in two runs. John Vander Wal's RBI double in the first opened the scoring.
Gonzalez, who chose not to participate in the All-Star Game, got Texas within 3-1 in the fourth with his 24th home run.
Zeile went 2-for-4, extending his hitting streak to a career-high 17 games.
