Commentary (by me)

Aaron Sele looked really good, like he had some of his best stuff going tonight.  He was great through the first six innings, but seemed to crap out come the seventh - he had something like 115 pitches, if I'm not mistaken.  He gave up two innings, before handing the ball over to Venafro, who ended the seventh inning.  Jeff Zimmerman came in and got another scoreless inning - lowering his ERA from 0.89 to 0.88.  It's about at the point where it's not going anywhere else.  :)  John Wetteland would have come in for the ninth, but we scored a couple of more runs in the top of the 9th, putting a save out of reach, so Tim Crabtree came in for the ninth, and did really well.  Again, our bullpen led the way - giving up nothing.

Our offence got started early with a solo home run by Pudge in the first inning.  We also had home runs from two others, a solo shot by Ruben Mateo, just back from the DL, and a two run shot by Royce Clayton (whose mother was shown in the stands cheering for him after the hr).  Overall, it seemed like a very nice game - good pitching (2 runs on 9 hits), great offense (3 HR, 7 runs on 8 hits), and some awesome defense.

Twice Aaron Sele got out of bases loaded, once in a most cool factor.  Bases were loaded with no one out, and Sele got a really big strikeout.  Then he got Jackson to hit a ball back to him, and Sele converted a really cool pitcher to catcher to first double play ending the inning.

Todd Zeile did not play, he was "excused" from the game, as he had a personal matter to attend to at home (as his family is in Los Angeles).

Couple of interesting things about the game..  It seemed that every time Juan came up, he was booed (not terribly loudly, but you could hear it on TV), and when Pudge came into the dugout one time, there were two girls within earshot of a microphone screaming "Pudge, we came all the way from Texas, will you sign my ball?  We love youuuuuuuuu!"   Cute.  :)

Tomorrow we're on national Fox TV coverage - let's see how bad they dump on Juan for his All-Star game stance.

Game Recap

SAN DIEGO (TICKER) -- Ivan Rodriguez, rookie Ruben Mateo and Royce Clayton homered as the Texas Rangers picked up their first-ever win in San Diego, a 7-2 triumph over the Padres.

Rodriguez opened the scoring in the first inning with his 15th homer, a solo shot off starter Woody Williams. The Rangers' catcher was only 3-for-18 in his previous four games.

Mateo, who was activated from the disabled list before the game, smacked his second homer to lead off the fourth. Mark McLemore added an RBI single later in the inning for a 3-0 advantage.

Clayton contributed a two-run shot in the sixth to open a five-run cushion. He was hitting 3-for-17 in his last five contests.

"(Williams) threw me a fastball out over the plate," Clayton said. "He had been pretty tough on me all night with breaking balls and change-ups. In that particular at-bat with two outs, I thought I was more likely to get a pitch to hit."

Texas had been swept in two games at Qualcomm Stadium in 1997, but improved to 5-3 all-time against the Padres.

Williams (4-7) was yanked following the sixth inning, allowing five runs and six hits with five strikeouts. Over his last two starts, he has been tagged for 15 earned runs and 19 hits in only 9 1/3 innings.

San Diego had the bases loaded with none out in the second inning and failed to score. Texas starter Aaron Sele struck out Ben Davis and induced Damian Jackson to hit a comebacker that resulted in an inning-ending double play.

"They had a speed guy up there (Jackson) and he hit a perfect ball," Rangers manager Johnny Oates said. "He doesn't hit into too many double plays."

The Padres had the bases juiced with two outs in the fourth, but Williams grounded into a fielders choice to kill the rally.

"We had a couple of real good opportunities and we just didn't cash in," Padres manager Bruce Bochy said. "Their guys made good pitches when they had too. (Sele) had pretty good command of his fastball."

Sele (8-6) picked up his first win in four starts, yielding two runs and nine hits over 6 2/3 innings. His eight strikeouts were the most since he fanned 10 Anaheim Angels on April 11.

"I had great defense behind me and was able to work out of jams early," Sele said. "I felt like I was more consistent on all of my pitches. I was able to throw strikes with the fastball and a curve."

Quilvio Veras and Reggie Sanders delivered RBI singles for the Padres in the seventh, but Rusty Greer and Juan Gonzalez answered with sacrifice flies in the ninth to restore Texas' five-run lead.

Sanders extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a seventh-inning single, but teammate Eric Owens went 0-for-3 and had his 18-game streak halted.
