TX Rangers Media Notes |
Commentary (by me)
This was just like the July 4th game. We were totally shut down by the
opposing pitcher (this time it's Jimmy Haynes). Although he didn't pitch all 9
innings, he pitched really well, and got some nice support from the bullpen to shut down
the Rangers, with a total of four hits over the nine innings. Again, we had a bit of
a threat in the 9th, but nothing happened.
Ryan Glynn killed himself with a million walks, two of which came around for runs. Juan Gonzalez made an awesome defensive play in the game throwing out a runner trying to score at the plate on a rocket of a throw from the bullpen on the right hand side - there was no doubt, either, he was out by a mile. This double play saved Glynn's butt when he had walked the bases loaded. This might be Glynn's last appearance, my gut says he'll be going back to AAA after the All-Star game.
Jimmy Haynes of Oakland really looked great - it's tough to do anything against a pitcher that pitches this well against you. Mike Munoz pitched a few really good innings, I thought again last night that he was an excellent pickup in the past off-season. Loaiza made another short appearance in relief - he did his job, but he doesn't seem to be hanging around long enough at one time to know how well he really looks.
Todd Zeile did extend his hitting streak to 15 - Pudge has the current season record of 20.
Game Recap
OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA (TICKER) -- Jimmy Haynes and three relievers held the
first-place Texas Rangers to just four hits and John Jaha hit a two-run homer as the
Oakland Athletics posted a 4-0 victory.
Haynes (6-6) yielded three hits over seven innings with six strikeouts and two
walks, improving to 5-2 lifetime against Texas. The righthander has lasted at least seven
innings in each of his last four outings.
"The changes I've been working on are really starting to work," Haynes said.
"Mentally, I'm feeling great. My concentration is really high and I'm able to get
through the batters. It used to be that I'd throw a lot of slurves. But I've tightened it
up and now I'm throwing a lot of sliders. I'm zeroing in at the plate."
Tim Worrell, Buddy Groom, and Bill Taylor combined to toss two scoreless innings of
relief, giving up one hit, striking out one and walking two.
"Haynes was the story of the game," Oakland manager Art Howe said. "He was
outstanding. It was one of the best efforts I've seen from him. He's like a new pitcher.
He has complete command of all his pitches and he's aggressive. Besides, he's fun to
watch."
Ryan Glynn (2-3), who had received 32 runs of support in his last two outings -- both
wins, allowed all four runs and three hits over 4 1/3 innings. He struck out five but
walked six as the Rangers lost their fourth straight game.
"Ryan had good stuff tonight. We just have to make sure he stays consistent and keeps
the ball in the strike zone," Texas manager Johnny Oates said. "With a young
pitcher, there's a fine line between a pitcher and a thrower. Major League batters will
hit you if you throw."
Miguel Tejada had two hits, including an RBI triple, and Ben Grieve singled in a run for
the A's, who have won five of eight games against Texas this season. They improved to 5-3
on their nine-game homestand and pulled within five games of the Rangers in the American
League West.
Oakland received all the offense it would need in the fourth. Grieve led off the inning
with a walk and Jaha followed with a blast to right field. He has 10 home runs in his last
18 games and his 19 homers this season surpasses his total from the last two years
combined, when injuries limited him to just 114 games.
"I wanted to pitch him down and in but the ball got out. It didn't surprise me where
it went," Glynn said. "I just got overanxious out there. I had been doing that
out there. I've been able to get over it but not tonight. I have to pitch better. I have
to pitch to my level."
The A's picked up two more runs an inning later. Ryan Christenson stared the fifth with a
walk and, after Tony Phillips struck out, Tejada hit a 2-0 offering from Glynn into right
field for a triple. Mike Munoz replaced Glynn and gave up a single to Grieve that allowed
Tejada to score.
Meanwhile, Texas could not get anything going. Juan Gonzalez doubled to start the second
inning but was thrown out trying to stretch the hit to a triple. Rafael Palmeiro drew a
walk from Haynes and stole second one out later before moving to third on Lee Stevens'
infield single. But Haynes struck out Roberto Kelly to end the threat.
In the ninth, Worrell yielded a leadoff walk to Rusty Greer and was replaced by Groom, who
got Palmeiro to pop out to third. Taylor came on and gave up a single to Zeile that sent
Greer to third. But Stevens grounded out to first to end the game.
"He (Haynes) pitched very well against us as he often does," Oates said.
"We only hit the ball hard once. I've always liked Jimmy and I've always known what
he could do, and what he could do isn't bad."
Zeile has a 15-game hitting streak.
