Commentary (by me)

I don't remember a whole lot about this game, but I was fairly tired during this game, both because I was sleepy, and because I was otherwise occupied - I wasn't paying a whole lot of attention to this game.

I fell asleep before the game was over - the last thing I remember about it, the score was 9-5, which was in the top of the 6th inning.

Looking at the results, a few nice things were Zeile extended his hitting streak to the 12, Danny Kolb pitching 2 2/3 innings, giving up one hit and one run, and another home run by Mark McLemore.

Game Recap

ARLINGTON, TEXAS (TICKER) -- Alex Rodriguez homered twice and knocked in four runs as the Seattle Mariners overcame a seven-run deficit and held on for a 13-12 victory over the Texas Rangers.

Russ Davis added a three-homer that snapped a seventh-inning tie and Ken Griffey Jr. contributed three RBI for the Mariners, who rallied to win after trailing 9-2 after four innings.

Rodriguez belted a two-run homer in the fourth and smacked a solo shot in the eighth for his third multi-home game this season and the ninth of his career.

"Both times I got pitches on the inside part of the plate that I could drive," Rodriguez said. "It feels good to come from behind and win a game like that."

Jose Paniagua (6-7) picked up the win despite allowing two runs and two hits in 1 2/3 innings.

Jose Mesa surrendered an RBI single to Juan Gonzalez in the ninth but recorded his 18th save in 22 chances as he worked a season-high two innings. After Gonzalez's single, Mesa retired Rafael Palmeiro on a fly ball to the warning track in center field to end the game.

"The guys didn't quit. They kept battling and got the lead and hung on," Seattle manager Lou Piniella said. "To come back against the division leaders from a seven-run deficit in the their home ballpark is a nice achievement."

Gonzalez had four RBI and Palmeiro three for Texas, which had a four-game winning streak stopped. The Rangers still have a six-game lead over second-place Seattle in the American League West.

Gonzalez became the 10th player in major league history to drive in three runs in a game with sacrifice flies. Chad Kreuter of Detroit -- a former Ranger -- was the last player to accomplish the feat on July 30, 1994.

"It's nice to tie a major league record. But it would've been nicer to hit the ball out of the park," Gonzalez said. "I hit the ball very well tonight, but there was too much wind and I got them too high. That's part of the game."

Tim Crabtree (4-1) retired only two batters, allowing three runs and four hits, to take the loss.

With the score tied, 9-9, in the seventh, the Mariners completed their comeback. David Segui and Butch Huskey opened the seventh with singles and were sacrificed by Dan Wilson. Davis followed by belting a 1-1 pitch over the left-field wall for his 16th homer.

"With runners at second and third, I was just trying to get a pitch that I could put in play. Fortunately, I got all of it," Davis said.

Texas tried to rally in its half of the inning. Gonzalez lofted a sacrifice fly and Palmeiro singled in another run.

Rodriguez's 14th homer in the eighth provided the Mariners with a much-needed insurance run as Gonzalez's RBI single in the ninth closed the scoring.

Gonzalez, who led the majors last season with 157 RBI, has driven in 11 runs in his last five games and has 76 this season, third in the American League.

Mark McLemore's fourth homer in the opening inning off rookie starter Freddy Garcia and a sacrifice fly by Gonzalez got the Rangers off to a quick 2-0 lead.

Texas tallied four more times in the third to build a six-run cushion. Ivan Rodriguez had an RBI double and Palmerio bounced into a forceout to plate another run before Todd Zeile and Roberto Kelly delivered RBI singles.

Rodriguez's homer in the fourth got the Mariners on the board. But Garcia balked in a run in the bottom of the frame, Gonzalez had a sacrifice fly and Palmeiro came through with a run-scoring hit.

Garcia, who leads all rookies with nine wins, was shelled for nine runs and seven hits in 3 2/3 innings. His ERA jumped from 4.37 to 5.04.

Seattle began its comeback in the fifth off starter Aaron Sele. Griffey smacked a three-run double and Segui had a sacrifice fly, cutting the deficit to 9-6.

Sele was tagged for six runs and seven hits and exited after the fifth, leaving it in the hands of the bullpen.

Danny Patterson started the sixth and surrendered an RBI triple to Brian Hunter, who scored when McLemore threw the relay into the dugout. Rodriguez tied it later in the inning with an RBI single.
