Commentary (by me)
I didn't get to see or hear the bulk of this game, because I was out of touch
virtually all day working on my car, and didn't have access to a radio.
However, in looking at the box scores, it appears that walks killed us. Damn.

Game Recap
SEATTLE (TICKER) -- David Bell singled in the go-ahead run with one out in the
bottom of the eighth inning as the Seattle Mariners posted a 5-4 victory over the Texas
Rangers, evening the final series at the Kingdome at one game apiece.
After the Mariners blew a three-run lead in the top of the eighth, Bell slapped a 3-1
pitch from Tim Crabtree to center field, scoring Charles Gipson, who led off with a walk
and was sacrificed to second. Bell has 16 RBI in his last 17 contests.
"It's a situation where the winning run is in scoring position," Bell said.
"If you can get a hit there, chances are he's going to score. It's a fun situation to
be in. You try to take the same approach and be aggressive."
"We committed the cardinal sin of baseball," Texas manager Johnny Oates said.
"We scored three and tied it up and we go ahead and walk the leadoff guy in the
bottom of the eighth."
Jamie Moyer tossed 7 1/3 solid innings for the Mariners, but came away with his second
straight no-decision as the Seattle bullpen could not protect a 4-1 lead. Moyer, who
surrendered 10 hits, again was denied his career-high eighth straight victory.
"It's nice to win any game, regardless of what kind of lead you have or what kind of
game it is," Moyer said. "We won the game, that's the most important thing. I
was able to keep us in the game."
Moyer tired in the eighth, giving up a double to Juan Gonzalez and singles to Todd Zeile
and Lee Stevens that loaded the bases.
Roberto Kelly greeted Jose Paniagua (4-1) with a double to right, scoring Gonzalez and
Zeile. Shortstop Alex Rodriguez's uncorked a perfect relay throw to the plate, but
Scarborough Green, who ran for Stevens, barrelled over catcher Tom Lampkin and jarred the
ball loose.
Lampkin, who belted a two-run homer in the sixth to give the Mariners a 4-1 lead, was
charged with an error on the play.
"Without a doubt, he (Moyer) deserved to win that game and he didn't win because
somehow the ball got out of my glove," Lampkin said. "It's too bad."
Jose Mesa recorded the final three outs for his 15th save in 17 chances, helping the
Mariners beat the Rangers for the first time in five meetings this season. He came into
the game with a 13.83 ERA at home this season.
The Rangers threatened in the ninth as Rusty Greer walked and Gonzalez singled with one
out, but Mesa got Rafael Palmeiro to ground into a game-ending double play.
"Texas is Texas," said Moyer, a former Ranger. "They battle and don't give
up. That's why they are at the top of our division."
Rookie Mike Venafro (2-1) suffered his first loss after walking Gipson in the eighth.
"It's not do or die," Bell said, "but it was a big game for us."
On Sunday, the Mariners play the final game at the Kingdome, their home since the
franchise's inception in 1977. Seattle embarks on a 12-game road trip before returning
home to open its new ballpark, Safeco Field, on July 15 against San Diego.
The Mariners reached starter Rick Helling for two runs in the bottom of the first,
grabbing a 2-0 lead on consecutive RBI singles by David Segui and Butch Huskey.
Texas halved the deficit on Gonzalez's RBI single in the third, but Seattle stretched its
lead on Lampkin's home run. Gonzalez went 4-for-5 and has seven hits in the series.
Lampkin tied a career high with three hits for the Mariners, who won for only the second
time in eight contests. The loss snapped the Rangers' three-game winning streak.
"The tough part is the walk (to Gipson)," Oates said. "When you walk guys,
you've got no shot at getting an out. We've allowed the fewest walks in the league. We may
give up some hits, but I'd rather it be that way. When you give up hits, guys are swinging
the bats and you've got a shot at getting outs."
