Commentary (by me)

Well, I can only think of two words to describe tonight's game - BOMBS AWAY!!

It's Monday afternoon, and it's now 3 days since this game, and my memory is not what it was over the weekend.   However, if I'm not mistaken, all but 2 or 3 of our runs came from runs driven in by a home run.  It was very much an offensive type of night.

Game Recap

SEATTLE (TICKER) -- Ivan Rodriguez and Juan Gonzalez each homered twice and rookie Ryan Glynn picked up his first major league victory as the Texas Rangers posted a 14-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners in the opener of the final series ever played at the Kingdome.

Rodriguez and Gonzalez each drove in five runs and Lee Stevens added a homer and two RBI for the Rangers, who moved 10 games over .500 with their third straight win. Texas also improved to 13-1 indoors this season.

"We've seen the bats come along real well the last few days," said Rangers manager Johnny Oates. "We started slow tonight, but came on."

"I'm feeling very good hitting here," Rodriguez said. "It's not easy to hit, concentrate and focus on what you're going to do in the game and hit the ball hard. But today, I just hit the ball pretty good and I did good for the team."

Glynn (1-2) surrendered four runs and six hits over 5 1/3 innings, walking two and striking out four. Mike Munoz followed with 1 2/3 scoreless frames before Danny Patterson finished up with two hitless innings.

"The win is important for me personally," said Glynn. "It's a very important road trip for us, playing all in the division. I'm glad I've had the opportunity. I gave us a chance to win tonight. I felt very relaxed and in control out there. I stayed relaxed and focused."

After starter Paul Abbott allowed just three runs over five innings, Frank Rodriguez (2-2) was tagged for three runs in two-thirds of an inning. Melvin Bunch followed and was hit hard, allowing eight runs and 11 hits over 3 1/3 innings.

"He pitched pretty well," said Seattle manager Lou Piniella of Abbott. "He's just got to get stronger, build some endurance. He just ran out of gas in the sixth inning. Outside of that, the game just got out of hand."

The Mariners, who were without Ken Griffey, Jr. tonight, will embark on a 12-game road trip after this weekend before returning home to open their new ballpark, Safeco Field, on July 15 against San Diego.

Griffey missed the game with dizziness.

The Rangers took a 1-0 lead in the first on Rodriguez's 12th homer but the Mariners answered with a run in the second on double-play grounder by Dan Wilson.

Seattle took a 3-1 lead in the fifth on a groundout by Russ Davis and a sacrifice fly by Brian Hunter. But Texas broke open the game with six runs in the sixth.

Gonzalez led off the inning with hit his 20th homer and Stevens hit his two-run shot three batters later. Bunch came on later in the inning and surrendered a three-run homer to Rodriguez for a 7-3 lead. It marked the second big game at the Kingdome this season for Rodriguez, who had a two-homer, nine-RBI contest on April 13th.

After a 16-game stretch in which he drove in just three runs, Rodriguez has 11 RBI in the last four games. Since last season, he is batting .373 (22-for-59) with seven homers and 23 RBI against Seattle.

David Segui's eighth homer, with one out in the sixth, finished Glynn and drew Seattle within 7-4. But Texas again responded, scoring three runs in the eighth. Rodriguez lifted a sacrifice fly and Gonzalez recorded his 37th career multi-homer contest with a two-run shot to left-center field.

The Rangers pushed their advantage to 14-4 with four runs in the ninth. Rusty Greer drew a bases-loaded walk, Gonzalez had a two-run single and Rafael Palmeiro plated the game's final run with a groundout.

Gonzalez has eight 20-homer seasons, including five straight.
