Commentary (by me)
I was driving from Dallas to Houston when this game was on, and didn't get to hear
all of it, as I eventually drove out of range of KRLD.
I did get to hear Mark Clark give up another home run (a bit of a broken record with him, I think) and Todd Zeile hit a home run, but that was about it. No commentary from me, as I hardly heard any of the game.

Game Recap
BOSTON (TICKER) -- Rookie Jin Ho Cho picked up his first major league win and Nomar
Garciaparra doubled twice and homered as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Texas Rangers,
7-4.
Cho (1-0), a Korean starting his second game this season and his sixth in two big league
seasons, yielded four runs on two home runs but struck out six and walked just one over a
career high-tying six-plus innings. He gave up five hits.
"He mixed his pitches well and didn't get too many balls out over the middle of the
plate," said rookie catcher Creighton Gubanich, who caught Cho in Triple-A.
"He had really good control, used all his pitches for strikes," Rangers left
fielder Rusty Greer said. "When you throw all of your pitches for strikes like he did
today, it makes it really tough on hitters."
Garciaparra, who went 3-for-3 with a walk and upped his batting average to .332, gave the
Red Sox the lead for good, 4-3, with an RBI double in the second, knocking out starter
Mark Clark.
Garciaparra and Mike Stanley capped the scoring in the eighth with solo homers off Danny
Patterson as Boston rebounded from consecutive losses.
Jose Offerman had three hits and three others added two of the Red Sox' 15. Boston scored
seven runs for the second time in three games after failing to plate more than five in 14
straight.
"It was good today to swing the bats well all the way up and down the lineup,"
manager Jimy Williams said. "A couple of home runs there late really helped,
too."
Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield allowed a hit and walk over two scoreless innings for his
fourth save in as many chances in place of injured closer Tom Gordon.
Clark (3-7), a nine-year veteran, matched his shortest career outing, giving up three
earned runs and seven hits while recording four outs. He has lost four straight starts.
"I'm the kind of guy, throughout my career, I have always had good location and don't
walk a lot of hitters," said Clark, who blamed a bad sinking fastball. "The last
couple of games, though, I'm falling behind guys. It's like I don't have any clue where
the strikezone is."
Todd Zeile hit a three-run homer off Cho in the second and Ivan Rodriguez added a solo
shot in the seventh for the Rangers, who had won three in a row.
Texas managed only six hits against four pitchers and faces major league-victory leader
Pedro Martinez on Sunday.
"Their whole pitching staff pitched good today," Greer said. "We've got a
tough road ahead of us tomorrow, with Pedro. We've got to refocus."
Zeile's 11th home run over the "Green Monster" in
left field gave the Rangers a 3-1 lead. But Boston answered with three runs in the bottom
of the inning.
Damon Buford led off with a double and one out later, scored on one of Offerman's three
singles. John Valentin then singled and scored on rookie Brian Daubach's RBI base hit
before Garciaparra's first double made it 4-3.
"I just fell behind too many batters, ball one and ball two," Clark said.
"It's something you just can't do with their lineup. Todd comes up and gets the big
hit for us and I go out and give up base hit after base hit."
Nine of the 13 batters Clark faced reached base. Offerman led off the first with a single,
went to third on Daubach's double and later scored when Zeile misplayed Stanley's
groundball at third base.
Clark, who walked one, struck out two and threw 48 pitches, also went just 1 1/3 innings
April 28, 1995, against the Rangers while with the Cleveland Indians.
"I think all of us have a period of time and a stretch we go through where things
aren't going well for us," Oates said. "I think that's what's happening to Mark.
I don't know if it's one particular thing or not. We'll have to break it down.
"I thought the story of the game, though, was their pitcher not giving us much of
anything good to hit. He kept the ball just enough inside and just enough outside to
really be effective."
While Clark failed to go five innings for the fifth straight start, Cho retired nine
consecutive batters between the second and fifth, striking out four.
"I thought one of the big keys in the game was Cho coming out in th third inning
after we took the lead and putting a zero on the board against that lineup," Stanley
said.
Cho gave up a single and walk in the fifth but stranded two runners and preserved a 4-3
lead by getting Greer and Roberto Kelly to to fly out.
Cho left after an impressive sixth inning, when he got Rafael Palmeiro and Juan Gonzalez
to pop up and struck out Lee Stevens. Cho, who was 0-3 in his first five big league
starts, threw 61 of 91 pitches for strikes.
"I thought he pitched a stronger game this time than he did last time," Williams
said. "Certainly pitching against Texas is always tough."
Cho gave up two runs in six innings Monday while not figuring in a 4-3 win over the
Minnesota Twins. He and fellow Red Sox rookies Brian Rose and Juan Pena, who is disabled,
are a combined 7-0 with a 2.11 ERA this year.
The Red Sox gave Cho an insurance run in the sixth on Trot Nixon's RBI double off John
Burkett, the first run allowed by Texas' bullpen in 21 innings.
Burkett, a veteran starter appearing in relief for the fourth straight time, gave up just
one run and six hits over 4 1/3 innings. He struck out four without a walk.
Rodriguez got Texas within 5-4 with a leadoff homer in the seventh, knocking out Cho. But
Kirk Bullinger and Mark Guthrie combined for a scoreless seventh in place of the
righthander.
Garciaparra and Stanley gave Wakefield breathing room with their 12 and seventh home runs,
respectively, in a three at-bat span.
After the game, the Red Sox announced second baseman Jeff Frye needs arthroscopic surgery
on his ailing left knee and expect to be without him for up two two months. Frye missed
all of 1998 with a torn left ACL.
