Commentary (by me)

I didn't think we had it in us to pull off the split.  This game felt really good.  Got a long ball, had small ball, had some nice defense, we did just about everything last night.  Hell, we pulled off the first triple play in 22 years (only the second in Ranger history).

Roger Clemens was masterful early.  He struck out ten in the first four innings, including everyone in the first two innings.  However, we ended up getting to him (and the Yankees) in the latter part of the game.

I was flipping back and forth between this game and the Stars game, so I didn't see everything, but I did see the triple play.  What was funny was that the guy who hit into it (Chili Davis) also hit into a double play later.  :)

I've been impressed with Gregg Zaun the last few days.   He's not the greatest catcher around, but he certainly did his part when called upon.  I was very disappointed when Bill Haselman signed somewhere else after last year, but I have to say...  Gregg Zaun has grown on me.

"It was a team effort" is so cliched, but here it meant something.  This game was won by the team, not by any one player.  This was spectacular baseball, the kind of stuff a hardcore baseball fan lives for.

We survived Yankee Stadium, breaking our 7 game losing streak there with a split.  Now it's on to Beantown for four more - I like playing Boston, we always seem to get good baseball playing them.

Game Recap

BRONX, NEW YORK (TICKER) -- The Texas Rangers overcame a blistering start by Roger Clemens and battled through the raindrops to post a 4-2 victory over New York and a winning streak at Yankee Stadium.

Clemens (6-2) struck out the first six Rangers he faced and fanned 10 through four innings, but Texas was able to scratch out three runs against the two-time defending American League Cy Young award winner.

"(Clemens) was dominant tonight," Yankees manager Joe Torre said. "Half the base hits he gave up were of the infield variety. It was just one of those games that we just weren't meant to win."

After losing seven straight at Yankee Stadium, a streak that included the first two games of last season's Division Series, the Rangers have posted back-to-back victories over the world champions to earn a split of the four-game series.

Texas had lost four in a row before winning the last two.

The Rangers also turned their second triple play in franchise history.

"We knew it was going to be tough to beat (Clemens)," said Rangers outfielder and former Yankee Roberto Kelly. "He started off the game pretty good, but we caught a break. When we got that triple play, we knew that things were going our way."

Clemens struck out 13 -- the 94th time in his career and the first time this season he has recorded at least 10 -- but was locked in a 2-2 tie entering the seventh.

Rangers catcher Gregg Zuan began the frame with an infield single and was sacrificed to second by Royce Clayton. Mark McLemore's groundout sent Zaun to third.

New York thought it was out of the inning moments later when it appeared Kelly struck out swinging. But Kelly was not called out and drove in the eventual winning run with a swinging bunt down the third-base line.

Paul O'Neill singled with one out in the bottom of the eighth for the Yankees but was erased when Chili Davis lined back to pitcher Mike Munoz, resulting in a double play.

Ironically, it was Davis who lined into the triple play in the second. Yankees manager Joe Torre called for a hit-and-run with Tino Martinez at second and O'Neill on first. McLemore caught the liner at second base, threw to second for the second out and watched as shortstop Clayton flipped to first.

"You look out there tonight and you see Chili hit two balls the way he did and end up with five outs on two swings," said Rangers manager Johnny Oates. "Then we score the winning run off Roger with a ball that didn't go 45 feet out of home plate. I guess that's the reason we play the game between the white lines."

"I hit both balls hard," Davis said. "I made good swings. We can't direct where it goes. If I could, I'd hit 1.000."

Texas recorded its first triple play since August 8, 1977 against Oakland. The Yankees had not hit into a triple play since June 15, 1989 versus the Milwaukee Brewers.

O'Neill misplayed Clayton's fly ball in the ninth into a triple and McLemore followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Rangers and closer John Wetteland an insurance run.

Wetteland, who closed out all four of New York's wins in the 1996 World Series, set down the side in order in the ninth for his 24th save in 26 chances, making a winner of Aaron Sele (7-5).

"You go out there and win the ballgame," Wetteland said. "If it's 3-2, fine. If it's 10-0, fine. The point is you need to win. That's what is going on. I'm not going to sit here and explain why we're winning games 3-2."

Sele, who improved to 4-8 in 16 career games against the Yankees, allowed just two runs and six hits over seven innings, striking out five with five walks.

"It's a combination of good pitching and good defense and timely hitting," Sele said. "That's the way you win any game."

Juan Gonzalez hit his 19th homer off Clemens in the sixth to force a 2-2 tie.
