Commentary (by me)

None - don't feel like talking about the Yankee curse.  :)

Commentary (by Jim Meeks)

Oh oh.

The Rangers' slump reached 4 games after the Yankees held the Rangers to just 4 hits. The Rangers lost 6-2.

Ryan Glynn, not to be confused with Nolan Ryan, hasn't had a good outing yet. Glynn who been more like John Glenn - of the astronoimal ERA's.

I think it's time to try someone else on the mound in his stead. (Is Esteban Loaiza ready yet? Would Loaiza do any worse?).

The offense has gone on pre-summer vacation. And it doesn't get any easier. There are 2 more games left with the "Rangers can't beat you but everyone else can" Yankees and then 4 more with the Red Sox.

To top it off, Johnny Oates went nuts in the clubhouse after the game, erupting during a team meeting, ended by him throwing a baseball at a locker in disgust over his team's recent play - especially against the Yankees. The previous time Oates held a closed door team meeting, the team responded positively.

Do they have enough pitching to respond positively again?

Game Recap

BRONX, NEW YORK (TICKER) -- Rookie Ryan Glynn made the world champion New York Yankees look like a second division ballclub during five of the six innings he was on the mound. But in the second, Glynn seemed in awe of his surroundings.

The Yankees scored six times in the decisive second inning, highlighted by Derek Jeter's three-run homer, and continued their mastery of the Texas Rangers with a 6-2 triumph.

Glynn (0-1), who absorbed his first career loss, retired the side in order in the first, third, fourth and fifth and allowed just two harmless singles to Chili Davis and Shane Spencer in the sixth. The second was another story, however, as Glynn allowed three hits, walked two batters and threw a wild pitch that resulted in a run and surrendered Jeter's shot over the right-field fence.

"You do expect it," Yankees manager Joe Torre said of Jeter's success. "He is in such a good groove. He has struck out a few more time in the last couple of games than we would like but we are spoiled by him. He works hard and does not waste time or a day. He looks to play everyday and has a great level of excitement."

That was all David Cone (7-2) would need. The crafty righthander overcame a shaky second of his own to last seven innings, allowing just two runs and four hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Cone beat the Rangers for the second time this season and is 10-3 lifetime versus Texas.

"Getting a six-run inning was huge," said Cone. "I had a really good fastball tonight and having a big lead changes everything. You can afford to make mistakes with a lead. After the lead I tried to minimize the damage, keep it close and put us in position to win the game."

Glynn was the 17th starter looking for his first major league victory against Cone. Those pitchers are 0-13 in that situation.

Including the 1998 Division Series, New York has won six straight at home against the Rangers and 18 of the last 24 since the start of the 1996 season.

"I have no idea (why we beat the Rangers), they have a really good team," added Jeter. "I guess it's because we don't really worry or dwell on what happened in the past."

The Yankees won for the fifth time in six games overall and maintained a 1 1/2-game lead over the Boston Red Sox in the American League East.

Glynn breezed threw the first on just 16 pitches and recorded back-to-back strikeouts of Jeter and Paul O'Neill to end the frame. But he walked Bernie Williams leading off the second and Tino Martinez and Davis followed with singles to force a 1-1 tie.

After Spencer flied out, Luis Sojo snapped an 0-for-14 skid with a bloop into left-center field that scored Martinez and sent Davis to third. Center fielder Ruben Mateo bobbled the ball, and Sojo raced into second for a double.

Joe Girardi flied out, but Chuck Knoblauch walked to set the stage for Jeter, who drilled an 0-1 delivery over the wall to give the Yankees a 6-1 lead. It was the 14th time this season that the Yankees have batted around.

"I think the whole team would like to take that inning back," Glynn said. "I didn't execute one pitch. In the bigs, if you don't execute, they hit it out. I wouldn't have gotten away with that pitch (to Jeter) in the minors, it was a bad pitch."

"Unfortunately you can't take back a bad inning or at-bat," said Texas manager Johnny Oates. "Unfortunately, one bad inning or one bad pitch can cost you a ballgame."

The home run was the only hit for Jeter, who had multiple hits in each of his last seven games.

"When I think about that (the home run), you saw what happened the rest of the game," Jeter said.

The game's offbeat moment occurred in Texas' half of the sixth, when with two outs, Juan Gonzalez hit a soft fly ball to center that Williams inexplicably dropped. But Williams scampered after the ball and fired to first baseman Martinez, who was standing on the second base bag and easily tagged out Gonzalez.

Cone walked Palmeiro leading off the second and Lee Stevens doubled to left-center to give Texas the lead. Gregg Zaun had a sacrifice fly in the seventh but that was was essentially the night's offense for the Rangers, who went down in order in the third, fourth and fifth.

Stevens broke an 0-for-19 slump at Yankee Stadium with the RBI double.

Palmeiro extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a single in the seventh inning.
