Commentary (by me)
Let's see, lots of strange stuff in this game.. 13 innings, a balk, a streaker
in the field, Juan Gonzalez ejected for arguing balls and strikers, a Ranger reliever
being tied for the team lead in wins with 6, a Wetteland blown save, and 6 different
players batting in the 7 runs we scored (Raffy was the only person with two).
Quite a bizarre game. Took four and a half hours, and we finally pulled it out. I thought we were dead in the bottom of the ninth, but we got away with a double play that, to my eyes on TV, lookd like something we shouldn't have gotten. There was a strike-em-out throw-em-out double play, but it appeared the Royce Clayton pushed the Dodger runner off second and then tagged him out. We got the call, which is good, because right after that, John Wetteland gave up a solo home run to tie the game. Call hadn't gotten our way, we would have lost there (there's a picture of this below in the photos section). A couple other interesting things was that Goodwin had three stolen bases, Mike Munoz got his first save as a Ranger, and the Rangers left fourteen men on base!
Mike Morgan came off the disabled list (pushing Kolb back to
AAA), and pitched well in the first two innings, throwing a total of 18 pitches for the
two innings. Total of 8 for for first four outs of the game. However, that was
about it. He didn't survive the fourth. For a change, our relief pitching
wasn't godlike. Was enough to keep us in the game, though, and was by all accounts
still good.
A thought occurred to me last night, if Morgan is still with us next year, it's entirely
possible that he will be a teammate that wasn't born yet when Morgan made his first major
league appearance in 1978. This morning, I looked through the Media Guide, and saw that
this isn't true, but it's fairly close. Unless some really young kid comes up next year,
the most realistic to Morgan would be Ruben Mateo, who was born on Feb 10, 1978 (Morgan's
first appearance was June 11, 1978). Ruben Mateo was only 1 day short of four months old
when Mike Morgan first appeared. Yikes!
There's also Cesar King, who was born on Feb 28, 1978, but I doubt he'll get to the majors
with Texas, he's too good to be a backup. Carlos Pena is actually younger (May 17, 1978),
but I doubt he'll be up next year, and I don't see Morgan being with us beyond 2000 (if he
even gets there).
Commentary (by Jim Meeks)
I had trouble getting the KRLD version of the game on RealAudio last night so I
spent most of the game listening to the Dodgers' XTRA team of Vince Skully and Ross
Porter. It was actually quite nice as both announcers - especially Skully - had nice
things to say about all the Rangers. Skully is as good as it gets behind the mike and his
knowledge of the game is nothing short of astounding.
It was the same story as has been the last few days for Texas. Rafael Palmeiro was once
again the hero as he drove in a run with two outs in the 13th inning to give Texas a win.
On the pitching side - and it sounds like a broken record - Jeff Zimmerman pitched 2
scoreless innings to pick up his 6th win with no losses. John Wetteland however blew a
save (just his second blown save of the year) in the 9th when light-hitter EY (Eric Young)
hit a solo homer.
I would be amiss if I didn't mention the extremely valuable pitching effort of Danny
Patterson, who provided 3+ innings of scoreless relief after starter Mike Morgan faltered
in the middle innings.
Patterson, who most think will be sent down when Mike Simms is ready, may have changed a
few minds with his last two efforts, both being long, effective outings.
Game Recap
LOS ANGELES (TICKER) -- Rafael Palmeiro drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out
RBI single in the top of the 13th inning as the first-place Texas Rangers remained hot
with a 7-6 victory over the disappointing Los Angeles Dodgers.
Los Angeles tied the contest at 6-6 on Eric Young's dramatic solo homer with two out in
the bottom of the ninth. But solid relief pitching by rookie phenom Jeff Zimmerman and
timely hitting by Palmeiro handed the Dodgers (28-29) their sixth loss in eight games,
dropping them below .500 for the first time since April 25.
With Rusty Greer on first and two out in the 13th, reliever Alan Mills (1-1) walked
pinch-hitter Gregg Zaun, setting the stage for Palmeiro, who stroked the first pitch he
saw into right field to put Texas ahead for good.
"When you're out there that long, you want to go out with a win," Texas manager
Johnny Oates said. "Palmeiro comes through once again. It's been a nice road trip for
him, which means it's a nice road trip for me."
"We had some chances, they had some chances. Finally we were able to pull it
out," Palmeiro added. "It's just a good team. We've got guys who want to win.
I'm thankful it was my turn to come through."
Zimmerman (6-0) lowered his ERA to a miniscule 1.15 -- the lowest among all major league
relievers -- by tossing two scoreless frames. Mike Munoz notched his first save when he
got Trendidad Hubbard to ground into a game-ending double play.
Texas has won 12 of its last 14 games and has a five-game lead over second-place Seattle
in the American League West. The Rangers have won the last nine games Zimmerman has
appeared in.
Juan Gonzalez belted his 16th homer of the season -- a two-run shot in the first inning --
to stake the Rangers to an early 2-0 lead, giving the slugger 999 career RBI. Gonzalez was
hitless in his next four bats and was ejected by home-plate umpire Wally Bell in the ninth
after expressing his displeasure at a called strike three.
Texas starter Mike Morgan ended his record 17th stint on the disabled list but lasted only
3 2/3 innings, surrendering four runs and six hits. Rangers closer John Wetteland blew his
first save in five chances by giving up Young's homer in the ninth.
Los Angeles starter Darren Dreifort was pounded for six runs and nine hits in 4 2/3
innings, walking two and striking out six.
"We battled back," Los Angeles manager Davey Johnson said. "Darren got into
a rut but the bullpen did a good job."
Texas improved to 5-4 all-time against Los Angeles.
Raul Mondesi's two-out two-run triple in the bottom of the third pulled Los Angeles into a
3-3 tie and Young's RBI single in the fourth gave the Dodgers a one-run advantage.
But Palmeiro singled home a run to spark a three-run fifth that put the Rangers back in
front, 6-4.
Mondesi responded by sending reliever Tim Crabtree's first offering of the eighth into the
left-field pavillion for his 19th homer of the season, cutting the deficit to 6-5.
Jamie Arnold, Mike Maddux, Doug Bochtler and Jeff Shaw combined to allow four hits over 6
1/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Dodgers before the Rangers got to Mills in the
13th.
Los Angeles catcher Todd Hundley continued to have his problems throwing runners out. The
Rangers stole a season-high six bases against Hundley, including three by Tom Goodwin, who
matched his career high.
"I thought Hundley threw the ball exceptionally well," Johnson added. "They
are a good running team. He's just come off a wrist injury. I'm behind him a 100 percent.
We got the homer to tie it but couldn't get another run."
Despite his game-ending double play, Hubbard had a stellar night for the Dodgers, going
3-for-5 with two runs scored and a sparkling diving catch to end the top of the 11th.
Hubbard was caught stealing right before Young connected on a 1-1 pitch from Wetteland in
the ninth. The homer was Young's first in 111 at-bats dating to April 24.
"A fastball came right at me," Young said. "We battled back but you have to
give them credit because they battled back too."
"He hit a fastball up and in a bit," Wetteland added. "The offense, the
defense, the starting pitching and the defense have all been doing well. It's not a
surprise we pulled it out and won."
