Commentary (by me)
A win against the Yankees! That's always a good way to end a game. I
didn't get to see it unfortunately. Fox Sports Southwest in my area screwed up
again. The game was nationally televised on ESPN, and that was blacked out, and FSS
was supposed to be showing it. Well, the showed the damn Astros game again.
Methinks it's time to write to someone about it. :( I was
flipping back and forth between the radio and television, as my wife and I were watching a
movie, as well as Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
About the Rangers game.. :) We did it primarily with the big inning again. Those are always fun to see, but I prefer a more even win. A win is a win, but for me they seem better when you don't get all your runs at once. The Yankees started it off again with a home run (we seem to give up a lot of them to these guys), but Todd Zeile evened it up again with a solo home run. Jorge Posada put the Yanks up again with another home run in the 5th, and then we got a couple right back with a Lee Stevens double and a sac fly by Goodwin. Lee Stevens continues to look really good, which might make things difficult for Johnny Oates when Raffy is ready for the field again.
We got into the 7th, and when the Yankees are leading after 6, they're virtually unbeatable. Then we had another 5 run explosion. It was capped off (IMHO) by Juan Gonzalez' two run single with the bases loaded - finally delivering in the clutch (they had walked Greer to get to Juan). Zeile (who I really really like this year) then doubled and scored two more. All this put the Rangers ahead for good.
Munoz pitched very well, earning a win (Clark continues to be somewhat unreliable to ineffective, which doesn't seem like the promise when he came here), and John Wetteland got right back on the horse after last night. He did give up a solo home run to Tino Martinez, but that was about it, earning his MLB leading 7th save.
All in all a good win, but I would have preferred the win be more even, not with a 5 run inning again.
Commentary (by Jim Meeks)
It wasn't pretty, but the Rangers hocus-pocused their way to victory
Wednesday over the Yankees.
Coming from behind, the Rangers made the most of their hits in the later innings -
especially key were hits from Lee Stevens (who continues to hit left handed pitching well)
and Juan Gonzalez, who's power is MIA but still has 16 RBI (about half of what league
leader Manny Ramirez has) and is on pace to drive in over 120 for the year.
The Rangers - like the Yankees yesterday - clawed their way out of a hole. The 7th inning
was pivotal as they leveled what is usually the Yankees dead-pan bullpen. They battered
lefty Mike Stanton, then took on Jeff Nelson. When the inning was over, they had plated 5
runners on 5 hits.
The rubber game of the series is Thursday..
Game Recap
ARLINGTON, TEXAS (TICKER) -- Juan Gonzalez and Todd Zeile each drove in two runs in
a five-run seventh inning as the Texas Rangers ended the New York Yankees' six-game
winning streak with an 8-6 victory.
New York turned the game over to its bullpen for the seventh, but Mike Stanton (1-2) and
Jeff Nelson were unable to protect a 4-3 lead. Before New York was able to record an out,
former Yankee Robert Kelly tied the game with an RBI single.
Stanton walked Rusty Greer intentionally to load the bases and Gonzalez followed with a
two-run single off Nelson that gave the Rangers the lead.
"Stanton came in and the batter (Lee Stevens) hit the ball, broke his bat," said
Yankees interim manager Don Zimmer. "That started it for them. We were forced to walk
Greer later in the inning when they had runners on second and third. Greer wears us out.
That brought up Juan Gonzalez, and tonight he hurt us."
Nelson struck out Ivan Rodriquez, but on an 0-2 pitch allowed Zeile to double down the
right-field line, plating two more runs and eventually making a winner of Yankee-killer
Mike Munoz (1-0).
"I was feeling as comfortable as I ever have this season," said Zeile. "It
was a struggle on the road, but I was able to regain my stroke. Your confidence rises a
bit with each hit, and I'm getting back to doing what I can."
In nine career appearances against the Yankees with the Detroit Tigers (1991-93) and the
Rangers, Munoz has yet to allow a run in 9 1/3 innings. He also earned his first win since
June 28 as a member of the Colorado Rockies.
"We've got a good ballclub," said Texas manager Johnny Oates. "I don't have
a crystal ball, but yes, I feel that we can win. We have played good baseball the past
week. We have played the world champions tough. We beat the world champions tonight."
Tino Martinez had his 11th career multi-homer game, belting solo shots in the second and
ninth innings for the Yankees, who had beaten the Rangers six straight times, including a
three-game sweep in last season's Division Series.
"It's nice to shake the nemesis feeling," Zeile said.
Jorge Posada of the Yankees also broke out of a season-long slump from the left side of
the plate with a towering two-run homer in the fifth.
Martinez's homer in the ninth, his third of the season, came off former Yankee closer John
Wetteland, who allowed New York to rally from a ninth-inning deficit on Tuesday. Posada
singled with one out, but Wetteland struck out Chad Curtis and got pinch-hitter Ricky
Ledee to fly out, recording his seventh save.
"Regardless of what has happened before, when you're protecting a three-run lead, the
leadoff guy can't hit a three-run homer," joked Wetteland.
"It's one ballgame and we have to focus on tomorrow," added Oates. "The win
is more satisfaction than relief. After a tough game like that last night, and to fall
behind, it would have been a good time to go flat."
Zeile tied the game, 1-1, in the third with his sixth homer before the Yankees appeared to
take control in the fifth. Chili Davis led off with a single and Posada, mired in an
0-for-25 slump and hitless this season from the left side, drove Mark Clark's 1-0 delivery
into the upper deck in right field for his second homer.
Sojo contributed an RBI single in the fifth to give the Yankees a 4-1 lead, but an RBI
double by Stevens and Tom Goodwin's run-scoring single in the bottom half cut the deficit
to a single run.
"It was a critical time for us to score two runs and I can't say enough about the way
this club came back," said Oates.
Orlando Hernandez, who has a muscle pull in his left leg, started for the Yankees and
surrendered three runs and seven hits over six innings, striking out four and walking one.
Clark allowed four runs and seven hits over five innings with three strikeouts and no
walks.
"I am worried about my muscle pull. I was worried before, but I am really worried
now," Hernandez said. "I don't think I will miss my next start. Right now, I am
just going to try and get it treated. My last couple of starts my thigh has really been
painful. When I kick, it doesn't hurt. It only hurts in my follow through."
