Commentary (by me)

I was kinda tired when this game was on, and wasn't really paying attention - I think I fell asleep twice watching it.    Not to mention the fact it was a crap game - I don't really feel like writing commentary about this game 3 days later.   Now if we had WON by the score of 8-2, I might have felt like writing about it.   :)

Commentary (by Jim Meeks)

I can't write a whole lot today. Then again, there's not a lot to say about this game.

Aaron Sele, the most reliable Rangers' starter so far this year, was rocked by the A's Friday to pick up his first loss of the year.

The Rangers' offense was missing as well - and final score: A's 8, Rangers 2, was really more lopsided that it looks.

The Rangers managed only 3 hits (including a solo homer by Lee Stevens) while the A's banged out 17, a season high for them.

Eric Gunderson would be in danger of losing his job if the Rangers had a reliable left-hander at AAA to replace him. Gunderson saw his ERA climb to over 11.00. The only alternatives are Mike Venafro, Rich Robertson and Matt Perisho; Perisho being the best of the lot. Still, a call-up seems unlikely.

Game Recap

OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA (TICKER) -- Tom Candiotti allowed two runs in 6 2/3 innings and John Jaha drove in four runs for the second time this season to lead the Oakland Athletics to an 8-2 win over the Texas Rangers.

Candiotti (1-2) was making his 400th career start, joining Roger Clemens, Orel Hershiser, Greg Maddux and Mark Langston as active pitchers to reach that mark. The knuckleballer, who had allowed 11 runs and 15 hits in his previous 8 1/3 innings, improved to 7-2 lifetime against Texas.

"The defense played great and we hit the ball well," said Candiotti. "My pitch count was high enough, it was not a great game, but I made some quality pitches. It was a good feeling lasting until the seventh."

Jaha, who made the Athletics roster after signing a minor league contract over the winter, went 4-for-4 with two doubles and his third homer of the season. He also had four RBI on April 10 against Seattle and raised his season total to 10.

"I have nothing but good feelings about being here," said Jaha. "I've never been treated as well as I have here. We have a great young mix who are good offensively."

Jaha doubled in Jason Giambi, who was playing in his 500th career game, in the first inning. Jaha hit the first pitch from Aaron Sele for a two-run homer in the third and added a run-scoring single in the eighth.

Scott Spiezio added a two-run shot in the four-run third as the A's took a 5-1 lead. Giambi had four hits and Matt Stairs added three as the A's rapped out 18 hits.

Doug Jones pitched a perfect 2 1/3 innings of relief with two strikeouts.

Bench coach Ken Macha managed the team for Art Howe, whose father passed away on Wednesday.

"It was nice to get the win, now I know how Art feels," said Macha. "The middle of the order hit the ball extremely well."

Sele (2-1) lasted just four innings, giving up six runs and nine hits. He had allowed three runs in his two previous starts and fell to 15-4 lifetime in the month of April.

"My fastball wasn't working, it was going up and over the plate," said Sele. "My fastball sets up my curve and if that's not going over, they can sit and wait until I hang one and knock it out. I was missing a lot and behind in the count."

Lee Stevens homered while Rusty Greer and Juan Gonzalez had the other hits for the Rangers, who snapped a three-game winning streak.
