Commentary (by me)
I'm kinda busy today, so I'm not going to be able to write much. A few
points I noticed..
Commentary (by Jim Meeks)
Living here on the East Coast and being a morning person
, I didn't get a chance to see or hear Wednesday's game,
so I'll use this opportunity to reveal some things to you that you may have missed, by
reviewing the boxscore and a few other notes:
Every 12.3 pitches John Burkett threw on Wednesday became a Mariners' double...As badly as
Burkett pitched Wednesday, his ERA actually lowered quite a bit...Every hitter in the
Rangers' lineup had at least one hit...Rusty Greer was on base 5 times for the second
straight night, as he had a single, a double and 3 walks...Roberto Kelly hasn't had the
opportunity to play much this year, but perhaps he should play more often. He is hitting
.615...the Rangers had 3 stolen bases, 2 by Goodwin and 1 by Clayton. Clayton should steal
20-25 bases...Juan Gonzalez left nine runners on base, although he was simply robbed by
Ken Griffey on a line shot to the deepest part of the field (I did see that on ESPN's
Sportscenter)...Gonzalez has yet to homer this year, his longest drought ever, starting a
season...As a team, the Rangers left 13 men on base, which is hard to fathom, considering
they scored 9 runs on 17 hits...Seattle did give up 8 free passes on bases on balls...The
Rangers are now hitting .322 as a team, with a whopping on-base percentage of
.391...Anaheim lost again to the A's, meaning the Rangers are back in first place all
alone. The Rangers are the only team in the AL West with a winning record, not bad for a
team that has horrible starting pitching...The Rangers have already won this series from
Seattle. This is the second consecutive series the Rangers have beaten the Mariners in the
Kingdome, something I don't think they have accomplished since the early 1980's...No
midweek blues for the Red Shoes: Texas has played 2 games on Tuesday and 2 on Wednesday
and have won all 4.
Lastly and without commentary, let's have a look at Burkett's two starts this season:

Game Recap
SEATTLE (TICKER) -- Tom Goodwin singled home the go-ahead run in the top of the
seventh and Lee Stevens hit a two-run homer to spark a four-run ninth as the Texas Rangers
posted a 9-6 victory over the Seattle Mariners.
Goodwin, who was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, smacked an 0-1 offering from reliever Jose
Paniagua into left field to plate Todd Zeile and snap a 4-4 tie.
Stevens went 3-for-4 and gave the Rangers some breathing room when he hit Jose Mesa's 2-2
pitch over the wall in left field to make it 7-4. Mark McLemore and Rusty Greer added RBI
singles to close out the four-run frame.
"It was nice to get a couple of insurance runs," Stevens said. "I got down
with two strikes. I was just trying to put the ball in play hard somewhere. I happened to
get a decent pitch to hit."
Rookie Jeff Zimmerman (1-0) notched his first career win in relief, striking out one
batter over 2 2/3 perfect innings. Zimmerman has yielded just one hit in five scoreless
innings since being recalled Tuesday from Oklahoma of the Pacific Coast League.
"Zim(merman) came in and back-to-back nights, (you) can't be much better than he's
been," Texas manager Johnny Oates said. "You'd like your starter to get deeper
and not pitch as many innings out of the bullpen but we're capable of pitching even better
than we did tonight."
John Wetteland survived a rough ninth inning, which included a two-run double by Ken
Griffey Jr., to notch his third save of the season. Wetteland has 256 career saves, tying
him with Todd Worrell for 14th place on the all-time list.
Paniagua (0-1) took the loss, allowing one run and two hits with two walks over 2 2/3
innings. Seattle starter Doug Henry surrendered four runs and 10 hits, walking five over 5
1/3 rough innings.
"It was the type of game where it really wasn't pretty," said Henry. "I was
just doing what I had to to get by and keep the ballclub close. It seemed like I was
pitching with runners in scoring position all night. Sooner or later, you're going to give
up some runs when you do that. I'd call it ugly."
Rangers starter John Burkett lasted just 4 1/3 innings, yielding four runs and eight hits
while striking out six.
Reigning American League Most Valuable Player Juan Gonzalez had a run-scoring single in
five at-bats and has yet to homer in nine games, his longest drought to start a season.
Roberto Kelly went 3-for-5 with an RBI and McLemore drove in a pair of runs for the
Rangers, who have taken the first two games of this three-game set.
"We scored five runs the last couple of nights," Seattle manager Lou Piniella
said. "To score 10 runs in two games and get beat by 14. You should be able to win
with five runs."
Goodwin walked and scored the Rangers' first run on Kelly's one-out single to center in
the third inning. The Mariners got even in the bottom of the inning on rookie Giomar
Guevara's RBI double. Guevara is fillng in for injured superstar shortstop Alex Rodriguez.
Zeile and Stevens started the fourth with back-to-back singles before Royce Clayton
doubled home a run, moving Stevens to third. Goodwin followed with a groundout but
McLemore lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to give the Rangers a 3-1 lead.
Edgar Martinez doubled, moved to third on John Mabry's groundout and scored on Dan
Wilson's single to center as Seattle cut the lead to one in the bottom of the fourth.
The Mariners moved even in the fifth as David Bell and David Segui started the inning with
consecutive doubles. After Griffey flied out to left, Henry gave up an infield single to
Martinez before Oates called for Zimmerman.
Jay Buhner hit a sacrifice fly off the 26-year-old righhander to give the Mariners a 5-4
lead. But Zimmerman got Mabry to ground out, escaping any further damage.
"I'm a little bit bittersweet actually," Zimmerman said of his first major
league win. "I came in, there were runners on first and third and my job is to keep
those guys from scoring. I fell behind Buhner 3-0 and gave him a pitch that he could drive
to the outfield. I really didn't get my job done there."
"On the flip side, I did hold them for a couple of innings," he added. "I
felt that I got better as the game went on."
Goodwin helped Texas tie the game in the sixth. He led off with a single, stole second,
moved to third on a single by Kelly and scored on Gonzalez's sacrifice fly.
Ivan Rodriguez, who set a club record with nine RBI in Tuesday's 15-6 win here, went
1-for-5 with a run scored.
